Today had been the first day back at college for Jay, the semester had ended on a high for him. He had managed to get the necessary passes for his subjects to keep him on the basketball team and on top of that, they managed to win their end game. He still remembers the last few moments of the game, when he sunk that 3-pointer that put them on top of their opponents, the crowds running onto the court, followed by the after party. Not to mention the kiss, his first kiss and what better girl to have it with then Alexis Mcalroy. Boy was it a good kiss. The kiss had been plastered in his mind ever since.
However as great as life had been, it wasn’t perfect. Communication between him and his favourite blonde haired girl had been slacking. By slacking it was non-existent. Ever since Jay went back in to the party after the kiss Mel was gone and hadn’t contacted him even though they were talking before Lydia pulled him outside. He was going to walk her to college but when he got to her house he was told that she had already left. It bothered Jay that she was obviously avoiding him, she was an important part of his life and he wanted to know what he did.
English class was going to be the time where he’d find out if something was wrong for sure. He made his way into the class and took a glance around, holding onto his bag straps. Mel wasn’t there yet but a few other people were so he decided to sit down at his desk, putting his bag on his desk and leaning back. He bit the inside of his gum and felt his heart race, he really hoped she was okay and that their friendship wasn’t going to be affected.

Melanie was late. It wasn't like her to be late. In all honestly the girl hadn't been herself at all. She had considered skipping class all together but decided against it. Her education was far too important to skip, especially for her emotions. Actually building up the courage to come took more time than she had expected. Her pace was brisk as she exited the bathroom, her small feet clapping against the hard marble floors. She hadn't meant to spend quite so much time in front of the mirror, panic hitting her once she realized what time it was. What was she doing in the bathroom exactly? Giving herself a bit of a pep-talk in the mirror. She shouldn't have to give herself a pep-talk to see her best friend. That was never part of the plan. Things rarely ever go as plan though.
She stopped in her tracks once she saw the door to English class looming before her. She took a deep breath, trying to remember her little pep-talk. None of it seemed to matter, all of her silly words rushing away as her delicate hand reached for the door-knob. And there he was. Her complete idiot of a best friend. She quickly made her way to her desk which was unfortunately situated right beside the boy she'd been trying so hard to ignore. At the beginning of the year she would've never guessed that the two of them wouldn't be talking. She never assumed sitting next to him would be a problem.
She neatly folded her hands on her desk, large blue eyes glancing at Jay before returning to the front of the class. She took another deep breath, trying her best to keep a stony face. She couldn't let him know she was upset, though no doubt he'd noticed her ignoring him. What would she do if he confronted her about it? In all honesty she didn't even know why she was upset. Maybe it was the sinking feeling in her stomach when she walked in on him kissing Alexis, no doubt the most popular girl on campus. The girl was hot too, large breasts, revealing clothes, and a model face plastered in mastered make-up. Everything that Melanie lacked. Jay hadn't even noticed that Mel saw or maybe he just didn't care. She had left immediately, booking it home only to crumple onto her bed and cry. And gods did she hate crying.

There she was. Jay looked straight up at the door as soon as Mel walked in. He went to give her a smile but noticed how hesitant she was and just watched her walk to her seat instead, his mouth open slightly. There was definitely something up between Mel and himself and it felt like an arrow to his heart. His mind was trying to trace back to all of their previous interactions, trying to figure out if there was any time he could have upset or offended her but there wasn’t any clear ones that stood out. There were times where they were joking around but Jay made sure that Mel knew that anything he said was never to offend her and was just playful…Or so he hoped.
After a couple minutes of awkward silence Jay rolled his eyes at the fact she hadn’t spoken first to explain why she’d be ignoring him. He pushed himself up in his chair and leant forward on his desk, his arm spread out along the table gripping the edge. ”So… Did I die or something since the game night?” Jay said to Mel, in a questioning tone. He didn’t mean it as a verbal attack to her but he couldn’t deny that he wasn’t upset, or annoyed to say the least.

His voice made her stomach lurch and she felt as if she might lose her breakfast. He had promised nothing would ever get between them. Melanie had never broken a promise and never would, but clearly Jay didn't hold himself to the same standard. Maybe she just had to let it go, find a new friend. Of course she had plenty of friends as she was a rather friendly person, but Jay was the only one she felt completely comfortable with. She had told the boy her deepest secrets for fricks sake, things she was almost afraid to admit to herself.
"Leave me alone, Jay." she muttered, thinking it'd be rather immature of her to keep up a silent treatment when he was speaking to her directly. Sure she was hurt but she wasn't about to be straight up rude. All she had to do was get through class without interacting with Jay. She willed herself to do so, telling herself she'd only have to ignore her best-friend for another hour. And then the day after that. And then the one after that. Oh gods, this was going to be hard, especially if she had to see him every day.

Did she just say that? Did those words actually come out of Mel’s mouth? He wasn’t sure if he was frustrated or hurt or all of the above. He took a glance around the room, biting his lip a little. ”Are you serious?” Jay asked her, a small laugh slipping out along with his words due to his disbelief. He never thought he’d be told to leave his best friend alone. Maybe because they might be always together and be told by a teacher, but definitely not the girl who was the best friend. ”At least tell me what I did? You blanked me all week and I was going to walk you to college but was told by your parents that you’d already left.” He then continued on to say, calming down a little.
”Jay! Bag on the floor and focus on me. The teacher. You know, the one who gets paid to teach your dumb selves something so I can get paid.” The teacher called out from his desk, causing Jay to let out a small breath, before using his arm to knock his bag off the desk and onto the floor. Jay turned his body to face the teacher, who was also his basketball coach, and narrowed his eyes. ”Happy?” He asked with a fake smile, glancing over at Mel and giving a quick look to examine her facial expressions before back to the coach, who proceeded to begin rambling through the names of the class to see who was in, absent or late.

She usually loved Jay's laugh as it almost always followed something funny and of course would send her into giggles. Not this time though. This time his laughter was paired with annoyance, not joking or teasing. He was annoyed with her. The audacity! How dare he be annoyed when he was the one who hurt her in the first place. And then he had the nerve to act like she was the one being ridiculous... This would absolutely not stand.
The rather wounded girl was about to go off on him when the teacher's voice snapped her out of it. Of course, what am I thinking? I can't cause a scene in class... She sighed a bit, hands folded so tightly her knuckles began to turn white. She wasn't entirely sure why his laughter made her so angry, though her father's words echoed through her mind. "Anger is a secondary emotion," he had explained. "If someone is expressing anger they're probably hurt or frightened."
She jumped a bit as Jay's bag hit the floor, realizing that her father had been right. Melanie was hurt, though not entirely willing to admit or even comprehend why. She looked back at her best friend as their teacher took role. "I walked on my own," the girl said quietly as to not disturb the class. She wasn't a trouble maker and had never gotten a single mark in all of her school years. Her eyes returned to her desk where she stared at her hands before muttering, "I saw you kiss Alexis,"

Girls confused Jay too much. One day they were all happy and have a great amount of laughter with him and the next they can be moody as hell and suddenly decide to ignore him. Especially when he didn’t even recall doing anything wrong that could have potentially offended her. Jay didn’t even care about what the teacher was rambling on about, he was too busy looking out the window rather agitatedly. He was leaning his head on his fist whilst his other hand was still gripping onto the end of the desk, tapping the edge.
Jay didn’t bother replying to Mel talking about how she walked on her own, he already knew that. She didn’t walk with him like they planned so who else would have walked with her? Everyone else was too far away to have walked with her but then Jay heard something that confused him. Why would the kiss affect how they were together? Again, girls confused him. Before Jay asked her about what she was implying the teacher’s loud voice rung in his ears. ”Jay, you’re with Mel and you’re discussing the relationship between the families of Romeo & Juliet. Get working.” He said before walking off and beginning to pair up other pupils.
Jay paused for a second as he was paired with Mel. After letting out a sigh he slid his desk over so it was joint up with Mel’s, placing his bag next to his chair. His body seemed to feel slightly relaxed at the fact they were closer together, despite the fact they weren’t exactly in the best of places. But they can get through it, he just needed to find out what was wrong. So that was what he was going to do. ”So…you saw the kiss. Why does that mean you need to completely ignore me for a week…? Like…I don’t understand, shouldn’t that be a good thing?” Jay said softly to Mel, looking at her from behind as he slouched down in his chair tapping his pen on the desk gently.
