Last Night | Drew

[Drew Desher]

Kitty cats, especially kitty cats named Zeke, weren’t really on Drew’s mind as he drifted off to sleep. He had gotten so used to the cat being around that it was just kind of expected that he was there somewhere. Drew had admittedly had better things to think about though so he didn’t recognize the panic in Viv’s voice when she called to her pet and he wasn’t there. In fact, he probably wouldn’t have noticed anything at all if suddenly he hadn’t felt himself being shaken awake.

“Wha…?” He mumbled as he clearly struggled to fruitlessly cling to unconsciousness. Viv was persistent though and then she said one thing that got his attention real quick. ’We're in the wrong room.’

”Shit!” He exclaimed as his eyes flew open. ”Damn fucking shit!” Drew rolled over in his shock and the motion sent him rolling off the side of the bad and crashing to the floor. ”Shiiiiiiit!” He said again as he sat rubbing his head and realizing he was buck ass naked on the floor. ”Clothes? Where are our clothes?” And with that he was in a mad scramble across the floor looking for their things.

How could Viv be so stupid? If she was actually thinking with her head and not other body parts, it was quite obvious that this wasn't their room. However, it looked like she managed to shadow travel them into an empty room, but she didn't want to stick around to find out.

She got out of bed just as Drew rolled onto the ground. She managed to find a pile of clothes and started tossing his clothes over to Drew. “Here,” she said as she tossed a shirt at him. Once he had all of his clothes, she quickly got dressed herself, even though it was hard since some of her items were tangled among themselves. “Shit,” she muttered half-dressed as she tried to get her shirt separated from her pants.

So distracted was he by his search for closes that when she tossed his shirt it hit him the head. Under other circumstances he might have found that funny but now with the thought of being caught sexing it up in some random room he didn’t have much time to think about. Tossing her some frilly, dainty things that could only be hers Drew gathered up his clothes and did his best to set a world record for getting dressed. His shirt was halfway buttoned and one leg was in his jeans when he first heard the sound of talking coming from outside the room. He didn’t have any demigod powers to hear what was being said but whatever it was it sounded like it was getting closer and that wasn’t good.

“Shit!” He hissed in a whisper and began pulling on his jeans over the other leg. He risked a glance at Viv and saw she wasn’t doing much better than him so it was then that he decided that they were out of time. “Balcony!” He said and glanced to the sliding door that led outside. There was no time to argue. Snatching the rest of his things he hopped up and grabbed Viv’s hand to pull her outside. They wouldn’t be much better out there but maybe they could gain a few seconds and it was better than getting caught.

Viv barely had her pants untangled from her top when she heard Drew say something before she felt a hand on her arm that dragged her out onto the balcony. Shit. She decided whatever they were going to do form this point, she wanted to be fully dressed, so she got dressed quickly before she looked around. They weren't too far up, but she couldn't exactly make an easy escape. And Hades knew where the hell their room was. She looked down to see that the pool was underneath them, so she decided to take the plunge. Literally.

"We'll have to jump," she said as she started to climb the railing. "The pool is below us and we can figure out to do from there. At least let us get away from being caught." She gave Drew a smirk before she said, "I'll see you in a few." And then she jumped towards the pool.

He tugged Viv onto the balcony and out of sight just as he heard the click of the lock on the door falling away. Outside the hot, dry Nevada air hit him like a ton bricks as did the lights and sounds of the city. Drew glanced around and noticed that Viv had taken the opportunity to throw on the rest of her clothes and he figured he should as well as the sounds of someone entering the room behind them came to his ears. This little retreat would buy them a few seconds maybe a minute or two but they couldn’t stay here. That being the case they needed to figure a way out of this. Drew began looking around for an escape route but apparently Viv had others ideas.

"We'll have to jump," She said and that made him spin around so suddenly that he almost tripped over his shoelaces which were still untied. “What?” He hissed but she wasn’t giving him any chance to argue. He hadn’t even fully grasped what she was saying until she jumped leaving him all alone.

Drew followed her descent to the pool below and watched her splash down safely. “Damn it…” He said to himself. “Damnitdamnitdamnit…” There was one major flaw to this plan. One that Viv hadn’t taken the opportunity to discuss with them. Jumping into a pool of water was all very well and good if you knew how to swim which, as it so happened, Drew did not. He glanced over the side of the balcony at the pool and realized with gut sinking effect just how far away it was. The sounds inside the room were becoming louder though. Apparently whoever was in there had noticed that the bed was a mess and that meant he didn’t have much time to decide. ’If she kills me I swear I’m going to fight my way out of Hades and drag her back with me’

Flipping himself over the ledge of the balcony he could hear the sound of voices coming closer from inside the room. He cast one more dubious look down and the water and then closed his eyes. ’Here goes nothing.’ He thought and then leapt off the balcony. He didn’t want to see it, didn’t want to know when he was about to hit and that of course proved to be a mistake. He took a breath at the wrong time and before he knew it he had taken in a huge gulp of water and chlorine. He didn’t know which way was up but he knew he was sinking into the water and at that moment he began to struggle.

Hindsight is 20/20 and in hindsight... Viv shouldn't have jumped off the balcony. There were probably other ways off that balcony that didn't involve jumping that wouldn't end with them getting caught. Alas, there was only so much time she had to make this decision and alcohol played a major factor into it as well. Once she jumped off the balcony, she immediately had second thoughts, but it was too late. All she could do was hold her breath right before the plunge. The water was freaking cold and she had flashbacks of her accident, but she managed to break the surface as she gasped for air. She survived. However, she couldn't say the same for Drew.

She heard him splash right behind her, but he didn't emerge. She looked around only to see his flailing body underneath the water. "Shit," she said to herself as she looked around. There was no lifeguard on duty, which was just her luck. She swore again as she looked back at Drew and held her breath. She plunged herself underneath the water as she swam towards him. Hopefully he wouldn't get the two of them killed, but Viv swam up behind him before wrapping her arms around his torso. Once he was secured, she started kicking towards the surface.

Drew wasn’t afraid of water but he had always found that as a kid with a degenerative nerve disease swimming was right up there on the list of things he didn’t need to be doing. Still, desperate times called for desperate measures and surely one dive into a pool wouldn’t kill him. As he sank deep into the water and his lungs began to fill with something they weren’t equipped to handle he realized that he was drowning and how wrong his assumption about the plunge had been.

He reacted naturally enough. When he found he couldn’t breathe he began to kick out and thrash with his arms and legs trying to get back to the surface. The only problem was that without knowing which way was up his frantic movements did little to propel him in any direction at all. To the contrary he was sinking quite rapidly and the further he got from oxygen the more likely it was that he would die down there and wouldn’t that be a fine way for Viv to remember her trip to Las Vegas?

Drew’s struggles were already getting weaker when he felt something wrap around him and start pulling him through the water. Half dead as he was he didn’t have much fight in him which was probably good for Viv because by this point he couldn’t make it more difficult for her. He allowed himself to be pulled along more like dead weight than anything else and when they broke the surface of the water moments later he still wasn’t breathing. He had simply taken on too much water and for all intents and purposes he was dead to the world.

It was a long fight up to the surface, but once they broke it, Viv didn't notice that Drew wasn't breathing. She swam over to the edge and pulled both of them out of the water when she noticed something was amiss. He wasn't choking up water. He wasn't saying something to her. He wasn't breathing. She laid him on the ground as she started to panic. She didn't know CPR. She couldn't revive him like this. And it didn't help that she was having flashbacks about how she died.

"Shit," she muttered to herself as she moved her hands across Drew as she tried to figure something out. "Oh shit... shitshitshit." She looked up with wild eyes as she looked up at before screaming, "Help me! Anybody!"

[Gods & Goddesses]

It was a long time since the water spirit was visited by demigods. Well... by water spirit it was more of a pool spirit and the demigods did visit, but they mostly got stuck in the Lotus Hotel forever. But it was a long time since there was any demigods near them. But tonight they got an unpleasant surprise as two demigods plunged into its pool. And two demigods left its pool, but one of them was mostly dead. What a shame. But then they heard the crying out. Maybe they should help out... but it could sense one was a child of a Big Three... they could never become a higher god if they died. So with a sigh, they forced the water out of the boy's lungs so the he could be breath and not be mostly dead.

Drew wasn’t scared of death. He had been dying a long time before he had jumped into that pool and that had given him a pretty good sense of his own mortality. Still, he hadn’t expected to go out like this. His disease catching up to him? Sure. A monster killing him in the heat of battle? He could buy it. But drowning in some Las Vegas pool all because he couldn’t swim? Well that was certainly an unexpected way to go. That said it was kind of relaxing to be going out this way. No pain, no sickness, just a slow fade into the dark…

…or at least it would have been. The water that had been blocking his lungs was forced from his body very violently and blessed air came rushing in to replace it. With the air came consciousness and Drew rolled over to his side coughing and sputtering as the water came rushing out. He didn’t know what had happened but he was alive. He was alive and breathing and he wasn’t alone. Viv was there with him and she was screaming. “Vi..Viv…” He coughed. “Viv! Stop…stop yelling…You’re going to wake the dead.”

It was in the middle of her screaming when the water vacated Drew's lungs. Viv didn't notice that he was conscious again until he told her stop yelling. She immediately stopped as she looked down at Drew wide-eyed as she was partially startled. But when her brain managed to register it was him, she reached down to slap his arm playfully as she reached up to wipe away the tears that were threatening to come from her eyes. "Don't you ever scare me like that again," she said as she tried to keep her composure and cockiness. "You really had me scared."

She looked around seeing that nobody came from her calls before she sighed. "We should probably get going back to our room... the right one that is," she said as she looked down at Drew with a slightly apologetic look.

Drew was starting to come back to himself and he could have sworn that he saw Viv wiping some tears from her eyes. This was further confirmed by how much she seemed to be concerned about him which was a little different. Up until now their relationship, if you could even call it that, had been pretty easy going an open. This was a new side of Viv. One he hadn’t really considered before and one that he wouldn’t be letting her live down any time soon. “Scared you huh?” He teased. “And here I thought you just liked me because I was good at poker.”

Drew coughed up a little more water wondering how in the world he had survived that dive. He supposed he shouldn’t question it but it definitely felt like he was a goner there for a minute. “I wasn’t even awake for the good part of the CPR.” That said he was in no hurry to go for another dunk. Getting back to the room really was the best idea he had heard all night. “Hey, don’t worry about it. Wasn’t like either of us were thinking straight and besides, we did have some fun.” Giving her a weak smile Drew pushed himself up onto wobbly legs and waited for Viv to join him. He was still a little dizzy, maybe from the lack of oxygen or maybe from his Huntington's acting up, but he couldn't really tell. In any case he wasn’t going to admit that now. Instead he held out his hand to Viv in an attempt to gain a little stability. “Come on. The sooner we can get into our own bed the better.”

Considering everything that happened, Drew still had the nerve to tease her. He almost died on her and he was teasing her. Something was not right about that picture. She glared at him before she hit his arm again. That would show him, even if he was still coughing up the pool water. She took a deep breath that finally put the tears at bay as she looked down at him as he seemed to recover from his near-death experience.

"Joke's on you," Viv said with a bit of a shrug. "There was no CPR... I have no clue how it happened... you were just laying there and next thing I know you're just spitting up water." Viv didn't know that a water spirit helped them, but that wasn't any big concern at the moment. Getting back to their hotel room sounded pretty safe. She might have to keep him away from the shower and bathtub, but it was safe. She nodded her head as she got up off the ground before she took his hand. "Let's go then," she said as she led him back to the hotel and their proper room.
