He slowly let his guard down the slightest bit, a small grin splitting his face. "I was born in September too!" He proclaimed with a childish excitement. He found his own joy embarrassing, whispering a small "sorry" as he averted his eyes. The boy was far too used to being ignored and his passions brushed off. He'd gotten way worse than disapproving looks for reacting too eagerly.
He shook his head slowly at her second statement. He'd seen the parties from afar but just the thought of being near so many people made him dizzy, and that was only the top of the iceberg. No doubt there'd be loud music and drunk teens and so much touching. He hadn't ever wanted to go to something like that, but if it got him closer to Flynn...

A small giggle escaped the boys mouth to his utter embarrassment. He hated his laugh. If he even felt that he was passing as a boy then the feeling was shattered the moment he laughed. It was too high pitched and he usually went out of his way to avoid it. This time it just slipped out though, making the small boy blush slightly.
"I'm September. Like the month. Stupid, I know." he said shyly, hoping Flynn wouldn't give him flack for his name as so many people had in the past. He'd considered changing it all together, but seeing as he had yet to leave the camp since he arrived that seemed virtually impossible. Gods only know if he'd ever get to have the surgeries he needed. Binding was reasonable for day to day, but when in battle it wasn't an option.

Flynn. That's pretty. "New? I've been here for like... Three years," It seemed like a lot longer than that in all honesty, but the mental math checked out. He wasn't really offended by the fact that the girl had never noticed him. He wasn't exactly noticible. He was somewhat of a ghost at camp. He had noticed Flynn, though. She was kind of known for her wild parties, though September never had the courage to attend them.
Yet here she was, sitting besides him. "I'm in fifth cohort. We... Well, I'm sure you know all about our failures. Son of Chione." He hesitated on his mother's name, atleast the goddess who was supposed to be his mother. He often wondered if she watched over him. He doubted that she had too many other kids, and he hadn't met any at camp. The boy did kind of wish he had an older icy sibling to guide him though.

She needed him. September wasn't sure if he'd ever heard those words before. No one had ever wanted him, let alone needed him. Of course the boy realized that her words were virtually meaningless, just a joke on his behalf. Yet he couldn't help the light blush that blessed his pale cheeks.
"S-sometimes," he stuttered truthfully. He didn't have full control of his powers. They happened rather frequently without him wanting them too, and would occasionally disappear when he needed them. It was generally a lose-lose situation. He immediately regretted telling the strange girl this though, as without his powers he feared being deemed useless. "I mean I could probably cool a drink if I tried..."

The small boy's eyes widened as his handiwork resulted in the nameless girl's fall. He groaned to himself, mentally preparing to be ridiculed or even beaten for his own incompetence. He was physically prepared as well, tiny body tense as he raised his arms to cover his face. Hades knew he needn't another black eye.
The air grew colder around him as she approached, dropping atleast 10 degrees. He was slightly surprised when she spoke, as her words weren't exactly as angry as he'd expected. Of course, he could deny having any involvement in the freezing situation, but there wasn't exactly any one else in the field to blame. Besides, September was rather well-known around camp as the useless idiot from 5th who frequently lost control over his powers.
"I didn't mean to... R-really..." He stuttered squeakily, avoiding eye-contact the best he could. That didn't last very long as there eyes quickly crossed paths. He tried to follow the statement with an apology but was caught rather speechless, unable to pull his eyes away. Her's were like the eyes of a caged animal's, wild and hungry yet kept at bay, making it only angrier with a touch of sadness. He'd known that feeling before, but it was crushed and broken long before he'd left childhood.

September just wanted to be left alone in all honestly. He couldn't deal with the loudness of camp or New Rome. Heck he could barely deal with the loudness of his own thoughts. He was hoping to just lay in the soft grass of the Field and listen to the sounds of nature, the gentle breeze kissing his pale skin like dew drops.
Unfortunately the Field of Mars wasn't as empty as he'd hoped. A girl had occupied the space, chasing after a soccer ball like it was the only thing in the world. A small sigh escaped his blue lips as he considered going back to the Forum, dreading the length of the walk. Physical activity wasn't exactly his favorite thing in the world. He'd much rather be curled up with a book than running laps or swinging around a sword.
After some careful consideration he decided he may as well enjoy the nature and hopefully the wild-eyed girl would leave him be. He plopped down in the grass, yelping slightly as the wet dew hit his bum. Instantly the entire field became speckled with ice, every dew drop on every piece of grass effected by his powers. His control over them were rather nonexistent to many's dismay.

The young boy flinched as a pale hand waved in front of him. He was expecting for the hand to make contact with his face and braced himself for the impact. He was taken aback slightly as the stranger stepped away without striking him. In fact, the boy asked him a question. Sept's heart was still pounding in his chest, racing from the fear of getting hit. He was frightened out of his shock however, his small frame shaking quite a bit.
"Oh... Yea, food..." he squeaked, glancing down at the boy's extended hand. He reluctantly took the handshake, his hand quite a bit smaller and being practically swallowed by Jace's. He hated the heat coming off of the boy. He hated the contrast of their skin, as his was as cold as ice. September's powers didn't like it either. The world is obsessed with balance, the transfer of energy. As Jace's hand tried to warm Sept's his body fought it, frost spreading from his palm to the other's.
He quickly whipped his hand away and the frost receded with him. "Sorry," he mumbled, face red with embarrassment. "I'm S-september," he stuttered, struggling to make eye-contact. He contemplated just walking past but decided that would probably be rude. Besides, he was most likely too small to get past the older boy and he didn't exactly want to walk face-first into him for the second time.

He shook his head quickly, hoping he hadn't offended his new friend. "No, it's fine! Really," he assured with a shy smile. He was enjoying himself, however anxious he may have been. Anxiety was just a part of his life. The only time he could breathe normally was when he was curled up with Jean and even then the back of his mind hissed with promises of abandonment. It's hard to trust others when you've been kicked to the curb your entire life.
"I like libraries..." he mumbled as a suggestion, leg bouncing a bit as the caffeine certainly didn't help his ADHD. The boy did love libraries though, as well as used bookstores. Regular bookstores were nice as well he supposed, but there was something wonderful about books that have been read over and over again. There seemed to be emotions seeped into their pages, not to mention the lovely smell of paper and how the binding creaked in his hands. He was smiling wistfully at the thought, in a bit of a trance which wasn't unusual for him.

September didn't mind that Jean had a lack of feeling. He didn't completely understand though, either. He tried his best to avoid the topic all together as Jean seemed to clam up when it was mentioned. He knew what it was like to not want to talk about things. The young boy tended to evade conversations on his past. He tried to not think about it either but it always found a way to haunt him at night. The night terrors were the worst. They went away when he was with Jean though, yet another reason to cling to him. It was rather embarrassing to have to use a nightlight at sixteen. At least he didn't wet the bed anymore.
He loved it when Jean spoke French. He usually understood, as children of Chione speak fluent French. Unfortunately for him, his goddess mother resided in Canada, thus leaving him with only knowledge of Canadian French. It could make understanding Jean slightly more difficult, but he would try none the less. September knew that Jean was a lot more... well-off than he had been. It wouldn't surprise him if the older boy had been raised with maids. He wondered what that was like, every little thing being cared for. Meanwhile he'd received three broken ribs for forgetting to wash the dishes. "I suppose it is," he mumbled back as he trotted after. None of it seemed fair, life. But who was he to complain? He had Jean now and that was enough.

September nodded obediently, trotting beside the elder boy much like a small puppy. He was like a puppy in many ways, though more of a kicked one really. Skittish and wanting to please, following Jean's every step. He struggled slightly to keep up as he was a bit shorter as were his legs. He let out a little excited gasp at the mention of a bath. "Mhm!" The boy wasn't exactly skilled with his words. He usually communicated in various nods, squeaks, and mumbles. Perhaps because he was so used to not being listened to.
He immediately felt bad at Jean's next words, mumbling a small apology. He didn't mean to leave his books everywhere. It's just that he had too many and didn't know where to put them anymore. Books were his saving grace, pulling him out of harsh reality and enveloping him in wondrous stories. He liked the ones with happy endings the most. "Can we go home?" he asked quietly, assuming it'd be easiest to just head over to New Rome if they were to go shopping afterwards.

A small sigh left his lips as September wondered what'd be like to actually be recognized around New Rome. For the amount of time he'd been there he'd think more people would know his face or name even. Yet the boy was barely noticed. It wasn't that he was invisible really. People saw him, interacted with him, yet quickly forgot him. He just assumed he wasn't important enough to be remembered. Matthias seemed like the kind of person you'd remember though. He was still slightly frightening to the younger boy, but he wasn't as skittish as he had been earlier.
He was actually managing to make eye-contact, however fleeting. "I've never really been here," he mumbled with a small shrug. He had considered lying to have something to relate to, but was a rather bad liar and would've never gotten away with it. "I guess I'm not much of a coffee person," He felt a bit bad about this considering how much his counterpart seemed to be enjoying their coffee. It's not that September didn't like coffee, he just didn't really want to drink it every day. Besides, he didn't have the money for such things.

He nodded happily as he took the cold drink from the older boy's hands, smiling to himself a bit as he brought the straw to his lips. Nothing made him happier than a cold drink, not to mention the fact that mint was literally the taste of coldness. How was that even possible? Can temperature be a flavor? He sighed in content as the smooth liquid hit his stomach, matching his inside to his outside. The small boy wasn't entirely sure what to do at this point. He kind of wanted to run off while he still had the chance, but he was too far in to back out now.
He decided to scamper towards some small couches in the back of the coffee shop, settling down like a kitten. He took up as little room as possible, curled up in the very corner of the couch. He liked corners. They made him feel safe. He held his cup in both hands as he was a bit afraid to drop it, taking tiny little sips to savor the cold. "So do you come here often?" he asked innocently between sips with a curious tilt of the head. He wasn't in any way meaning to be flirtatious. The boy was just awkward and a bit poor with words. He hadn't even noticed that his question was considered a stereotypical pick up line.

The boy smiled slightly, not entirely used to the kindness Matthias was displaying. September had trust issues to put it lightly. That tends to happen when you're abandoned and abused repeatedly from the moment you're born. He paused momentarily when the older boy began to walk, hesitating slightly as he wasn't entirely sure if he should follow. After a moment of internal arguing he padded after the boy, looking similar to that of a lost puppy.
He followed a few steps behind with a somewhat awkward gait, not wanting to impose at all. Walking next to someone wasn't for people like him. He was meant to follow, to be lesser. He kept staring at the floor as he usually did, nearly bumping into Matthias once again as he stopped. The boy looked up a bit confused before realizing that they had arrived at a small little coffee shop. He let out a small sigh of relief upon seeing it was rather empty. Socializing with a stranger was anxiety inducing enough and he certainly didn't want to do so while trapped in a crowded room.
His face tinged a bit pink as Matthias held the door open, taken aback by the politeness. He managed to mumble a quiet thank you as he shuffled in. He stood behind the older boy as he peered at the menu, standing on his tiptoes out of habit. The small boy was a bit short and struggled on occasion to see properly because of it. He spotted the word 'peppermint' up on the board and let out a small excited squeak, teetering on his toes. "Oh! Peppermint!" he exclaimed with a small giggle. His eyes widened as he fell back onto flat feet, face heating up with embarrassment over his own enthusiasm.

He nodded quickly, slowly moving his hands away from his face. He was trying to be braver but it was a bit of a work in progress. He had gathered up the courage to not hide behind his hands but actually making full on eye contact would be much harder, staring at the floor. "I'm okay," he mumbled. Gods, why did he have to be so damn clumsy? It seemed he couldn't go a day without ruining something out of pure stupidity. He felt the urge to apologize again but remained quiet as the older boy assured him it was fine.
"I'm September," he said quietly in response, looking up at Matthias for a split second before his eyes returned to the ground. Coffee? Generally Sept avoided coffee... It was hot and bitter, two things he disliked. He supposed it would be rather rude to turn down the offer, and the last thing he wanted to do was offend him right after knocking into him. "Okay... But can I get it iced?" he asked, hoping the request wasn't too odd. Generally one didn't get iced drinks in the middle of winter, but Sept wasn't exactly normal in those respects.

A small smile blessed his soft features as Jean gently wiped away his stray tears, hands soft and comforting. It was odd how the older boy could always calm him down, not that September could exactly complain. He was just happy to have someone, even if he was terrified of them leaving. He nodded slowly at the boy's suggestion, though he didn't feel he deserved to be treated at all. He felt like nothing more than a failure. He felt that he deserved to be punished. Jean would never hurt him, though. He hadn't believed it at first but no longer flinched at his touch.
His eyes widened as the sabres disappeared with a simple snap. He never ceased to amaze September. Of course it was rather easy to impress the young boy. He saw the world through the eyes of a young child, surrounded by magic and wonder. Not that the world they lived in wasn't magical. They were the children of gods, after all. The boy even managed to surprise himself on occasion when he used his own powers. It's not like he exactly expected frost to spring out of his palms, especially when it would happen without him meaning it to. He had a bit more control over it as he'd grown, but he'd still wake up in a pile of snow sometimes.
