ANYTHING ELSE: Upon first meeting Ash one might find him a little hard to deal with. Emotionally, he appears detached and unsympathetic towards others, often reacting with uncaring or anger at signs of cowardice or self-pity. This can put him at odds with people especially those who don’t understand how his mind works. He believes that people should learn to help themselves and because of this he doesn’t mind giving them a healthy dose of tough love whether they want it or not.
Ash is not very patient especially when he is under stress. He will often make a rotating gesture with his hand, which means 'go on, hurry, move on' in conversations. Similarly, he tends not to over-plan his actions. Instead he trusts greatly in his instinct and skill at improvising according to the situation which, because of his practical nature, usually steer him in the right direction. He also lacks a great sense of humor and rarely jokes leaving many to wonder whether he ever relaxes at all.
However, even though it can be difficult to get around Ash’s hard exterior he does possess a strong sense of responsibility to those around him. He struggles with the value of friendship but at his core he possess a basic sense of goodness which can push him toward caring about others even if it appears that he doesn’t want to do so. Though a little rough around the edges he can be counted to come through when needed.

WHAT'S MY OFFENCE
THIS TIME
THIS TIME
HOMETOWN: New Braunfels, Texas
HISTORY:
Ashley is the son of talented signer Felicia Bates and the god Apollo. He would like to be able to say that he had a better relationship with both of his parents but unfortunately Felicia died shortly after child birth and Ash has always held that against his father (once he actually figured out who his father was that is). Because of this situation Ash was given over to the care of his grandparents Jack and Emily Bates who owned a large ranch in New Braunfels, Texas.
Growing up with his grandparents wasn’t particularly glamorous. His grandfather was a strict man and many times he took out his anger at losing his daughter on Ash making the boy out to be the reason his mother died. Ash tried his best to chip in and help around the ranch and maybe somehow work himself into his grandfather’s good graces but no matter how hard he tried he always felt like the red headed step child, the ultimate disappointment and it developed in him a feeling of resentment to those around him.
His home life wasn’t the only place that he struggled to fit in either. Ash never really found a crowd of peers to run with. In fact, more often than not he found himself on the outside looking in as many of the other kids liked to pick on him and bully him because of his name and the fact that he, like many other demi gods struggled so much in school. As a result Ash learned not to try befriending people and to instead to just depend on himself. He became a loner who did his own thing whether other people cared or not and aside from really one other person, a grizzled old ranch hand that worked for his grandfather, he mostly just kept to himself.
The lone exception was a man by the name of Alton Jackson. He was a hard old rancher that, like Ash, was kind of an outsider among the other hands at the Bates ranch. It was perhaps their commonalities that drew them together but in the older rancher Ash found a kind of mentor that he had never had before. It was Alton that taught Ash to ride horses and who instilled in him a love for hunting. Ash quickly found that he had a talent for using the bow (something he would later attribute to Apollo) and it became his favorite way to pass the time.
When Ash was thirteen he had his first run in with a monster. A harpy attacked him while he was working on the ranch and even though he didn’t have a guide to help him he was able to defeat the monster with the aid of his father who claimed him and showed his favor by sending a bow and magical quiver. Using the newfound weapon Ash was able to win the battle but not without causing a great amount of damage to his grandfather’s ranch. Knowing that he would likely be blamed for the destruction and not wanting to bring any more trouble to his family Ash did the only thing he could think to do and struck out on his own to try and take the trouble with him.
For the next year Ash wandered around on his own sometimes fighting, sometimes hiding and often running as he tried to survive against an unending stream of monsters coming his way. It wasn’t until he was discovered by a finder crew and eventually led to Camp Half-blood that he finally found some peace in the relative safety the camp provided.
Now Ash is the new face around camp and getting used to the idea that he is actually a demi-god. His time on the run has left him pretty haunted and he doesn’t talk about it much but he is starting to get his feet under him. He’s still not so sure who he can trust and understands there is good reason to be cautious as it seems he showed up at a very chaotic time so he’s still trying to decide if this place is any better than being on his own. Only time will tell but for now he is willing to give it a chance.

ROLE-PLAY SAMPLE:
Crickets chirped, birds stirred and all around him the forest came alive with the tiny sounds that he was familiar with as Ash crept through the tree line with his bow drawn and his hoodie pulled up over his head. He knew that he shouldn’t be out here. He was breaking curfew to be out here at night and if he got caught he would probably have to fight off a few harpies before Chiron ever got a shot at him. Fortunately the young demi-god really didn’t care.
The camp was fine. He hadn’t been here long but he didn’t mind the rules and it was nice not being chased by monsters all the time. Still, the plain and simple fact of the matter was that he hadn’t been hunting in a long time and the woods surrounding camp half-blood were too nice of a hunting ground to let it go to waste.
He had heard stories about monsters living in the forest and he supposed that they were probably true but that was fine as well. Monsters were a challenge but they were an excellent place to test his skill and what was the point of a hunt if there was no challenge? Unfortunately not even he was really prepared for what might be lurking out here.
A clattering his from off to his side caught his attention and let Ash know that he wasn’t alone. It was the only warning he got as in the next instant he found himself being lifted off his feet and flying through the air feeling as if he had been hit by someone swinging a tree trunk. His ribs exploded in pain but as he dropped back to the ground and skidded to a stop he realized that miraculously no serious damage had been done. He was winded though and as he got to his feet and got his first look at what had jumped him he began to have his first doubts about coming out here tonight.
The monster was a giant scorpion and it had swiped him with one of its large pincers. The creature was fast and even before Ash had fully recovered it had moved across the distance between them and was preparing for another attack.
Ash didn’t think. He let his conscious mind slip away and just acted by rolling to the right as a stinger dripping with green liquid slammed into the ground where he had been just a moment earlier. The creature thrashed and hissed in anger as it tore its stinger free but Ash had already come up from his roll into a kneeling position and brought his bow up to aim. The scorpion turned to face him and when it did Ash saw his shot. Without wasting a moment he pulled back his bow string and let a bronze tipped arrow fly straight towards the creature’s eye.
