Steal the Rainbow (OPEN)

Lucas had to be very sneaky around the Apollo cabin when none of his siblings were around. They seemed to know that their seven year old terror of a brother liked to get into their candy stashes, so they guarded them when he was around. But they always seem to forget to hide them or put them away when the cabin was empty. Well... mostly empty. Lucas was going around to each of his bubby's and sissy's beds and grabbing handfuls of their candy stashes. He'd open the wrappers and stuffed the candy into his mouth before he went to the next bed.

Bingo. This bed had a bag of skittles. His favorite. He was about to rip it open and stuff the rainbow into his face when he heard someone on the porch of the cabin. His eyes went wide like a deer in the headlights before he grabbed the bag of skittles and proceeded to dart into a closet in lock himself in. There he could hide from whoever decided to enter and he could enjoy this stolen bag of skittles in peace.

Ash stretched as he walked back to the Apollo cabin. He had just finished up a game of pickup basketball in the camp's rec area and he thought a shower and a quick nap before dinner was just what he needed after helping his team the win. Going six of nine from behind the arc was not shabby at all and after a performance like that he deserved a little R&R. Maybe he could even break open that bag of skittles he had stashed away under his bed.

Reaching his cabin Ash was just about to open the door when something caused him to stop with his hand resting on the handle. A sound like small feet scurrying across the room had come from inside and that told him that he wasn’t the only one who had thought to come back to the cabin early today. Ash sighed disappointedly and pushed open the door but where he had expected to find one of his siblings he saw only that the cabin was still and quiet.

’Odd…’ He thought and narrowed his eyes as he glanced around the room. Had he not been looking he might have missed it but before he had even taken a step inside he noticed a few carelessly dropped skittles leading off towards one of the closet. Ash was a hunter but he didn’t have to use his expert tracking skills to know what was going on. Someone was here and they didn’t want to be found. Fortunately they hadn’t been too careful covering their tracks.

Ash crossed the room calmly and set down on the edge of his bed. He had an idea what was going on here and when he checked his candy stash and discovered his bag of skittles was missing his speculations were confirmed. He was dealing with a candy thief. Glancing over at the obvious hiding place he knew what needed to come next. Clearing his voice Ash called across the room. “Alright, I know you’re in there. Get out here where I can see you.”

Lucas didn't know he just barely opened the bag just enough that the skittles would betray his location to whoever just walked into the cabin. But in the mean time, he was safe in the closet. He opened up the bag and started shoving handfuls of skittles into his mouth. Just in case he was caught, he wanted to destroy as much of the evidence as possible. But with each handful, he began to feel a little bit sicker.

He was about to take another handful to his mouth when he heard someone call out to him. His bubby. He stole his bubby's candy. And it wasn't any ole bubby, it was the scary bubby. He dropped the handful of skittles he had and they clattered on the floor underneath him. He could walk out of the closet, meeting certain doom, or he could do things his way. The Lucas way.

"NEVER!" he cried out as he hugged the bag of skittles close to his chest. "YOU'LL CATCH ME ALIVE, COPPA!!!"

When Ash heard the voice from inside the closet his mood was not drastically improved. It was his brother Lucas. There could be no doubt about that. The only question now was how he was going to deal with this now that he knew who had taken his candy.

Ever since he had gotten to camp Lucas had been a holy terror. Ash couldn’t be for sure but he seemed like one of the youngest kids here and it was like everyone just let him have his free run of the place. That or maybe they had tried to keep him in line, failed and eventually given up. Either way something had to be done about this crazy behavior and if no one else was going to Ash supposed that left him to do the job himself though he doubted his kid brother was going to make it easy.

“You can’t stay in there forever Lucas.” He said in that emotionless voice that seemed to be his norm. It was a little scary that voice. It was all business that voice almost like he didn’t really care what the outcome of this situation was because he won either way. “You can either do this the easy way and come out now or I can wait until you’re asleep or sick or whatever and come in and get you. I can tell you now though that if I have to come in to get you I’m going to give you a noogie you are going to feel for the next month.”

Lucas was in a pickle. A very big pickle. Of course he had to steal the candy from the scary bubby. Why didn't he steal his sissy's candy? At least she didn't threaten him with a noogie. Lucas held the candy close to his chest as he thought about his options. He could stay in here forever with the candy, but then scary bubby would get in here and give him the noogie and Lucas didn't want that. Lucas could also walk out of there and hand the candy back to scary bubby, but Lucas wasn't a quitter. He wasn't gonna give up the candy quite easily.

Once he made up his mind, he held the candy close to his chest and took a big breath. Here goes nothing. He threw open the door and bolted out of the closet and past the scary bubby and towards the door in hopes that he wouldn't get caught.

Ah yes, now Charlotte remembered why being cabin leader had sucked. Leader roles were always something she prided herself in, but some of it was just stupid. Cabin activities was one of them. She swore one more game of basketball and she was going to loose it. As she walked into the cabin, ready for a deserved nap she was stopped, well nearly bull dozed into by Lucas. She was glad he was back but boy did the boy. Well, he was Lucas.

She put her hand firmly on the younger boys head and turned him around, keeping him from running out the door. She couldn't see the candy from her view point but she could see Ash and knew that that her nap was out of the picture. "Care to explain?" She said,eyeing the two boys with a raised eyebrow.

Ash had expected the escape attempt and as soon as Lucas bolted from his hiding place he leapt from his bed to pursue. Fortunately he didn’t have to go far because before his brother could really get going someone stepped into the doorway blocking his exit. He had Lucas now and it had been easier than he thought. Glancing up to see his sister Charlotte in the doorway Ash gave her a nod of thanks and pulled up just short of grabbing Lucas around the waist.

He was just about to start in on scolding his brother when all of a sudden Charlotte spoke to him and she didn’t sound happy. Ash glanced back up at her looking a little incredulously at her. As far as he was concerned there wasn’t anything to explain…yet. “Lucas stole my bag of skittles and then tried to bolt with them.” He said simply. “You showed up just in time. Now we can both talk some sense into him.”

Lucas was almost home free. Once he was out the door, he could run to the Hermes cabin and they would protect him. Batman would make sure he could have his bubby's skittles and more. Just a couple of more steps... But he was foiled with his favorite sissy being in the way and physically stopping him. "Sissy," he whined as he tried to get out of her grasp. "I have to leave now... I have to..."

He could feel his scary bubby coming up behind him and he began to shake. Now we can both talk some sense into him. Lucas lost it. He completely lost it as he started screaming.

"BUT I WANT THE SKITTLES!" he screamed as he threw the bag onto the floor and skittles scattered around his feet. "BUBBY WASN'T GONNA EAT THEM SO I ATE THEM! I WANTED THE SKITTLES!" Tears streamed down his face as he stomped the floor and squished some skittles beneath his face. "I WANTED HIS SKITTLES!"

Ash's words and Lucas' screaming just caused the cabin leader to pinch her nose and shake her head. All she wanted was a nap not this. She looked between the two and smiled actually slightly. This would happen in their cabin. When Lucas threw his fit that was the end of all hope for the boy. She looked at her younger sibling, clearly upset with his actions. "Lucas," She warned carefully. He knew what happens when you get her actually upset.

She looked back at Ash and shook her head. "Lucas is going to apologize for taking your skittles." she said eyeing the boy before looking back at Ash "and I'll handle talking to him." she said simply. She knew how Lucas worked, candy bribes in order for good behavior. Maybe she needed a new idea on how to deal with it but she wanted to be the one to do it not Ash. After all she was the leader, she needed to keep Lucas in line.

Ash rolled his eyes as Lucas started wailing like a fire truck. He didn’t really care about the skittles that much but his kid brother’s tantrum was a prime example of the root issue and bribing him with candy wasn’t teaching him any lessons. Sure he was only a kid but even kids needed to start learning that calling in the wambulance was not the way to handle the situation when things didn’t go your way. Unfortunately it looked like that underlying problem would be skipped over in the aftermath of the great skittles fiasco.

Sighing Ash shut his mouth and listened to Charlotte. An apology was at least a start even if it mattered about as much as a fart in a whirlwind now. If Charlotte said she was going to handle things then he would let her. She was the cabin leader after all and if he had a problem with what she decided then there were better ways to handle the situation than making a big deal about it here. “Fine.” He said cooly. “I’ll get a broom and at least start cleaning up this mess.” So much for that quick nap before dinner.

Lucas was crying and screaming before he heard the warning tone in his sissy's voice. He stopped screaming, but he was still crying. He sniffled a bit as he glanced between his sissy and his bubby. Lucas is going to apologize for taking your skittles. Was he going to apologize for it though? He was taught never to lie, so that was wrong to apologize. He glanced over at his sissy and knew he wasn't going to get out of this without an apology.

He sighed as he took a deep breath. He clasped his hands behind his back as he turned to look at the scary bubby. He took another deep breath before he blurted out, "I'm sorry I ate the skittles that you weren't going to eat. They were really good."

Charlotte just sighed as she looked between the two boys. That was it. Today was the day her cabin would be the death of her. Mostly Lucas though. At least Ash knew she could handle it. Lucas on the other hand. To put it simply she whacked him upside the head. Maybe knock some sense into him. “Lucas you know what I mean. A REAL apology.”

Pressing her hand to her forehead she shook her head. “I’ll decide a punishment for him later as for now” she said rubbing her temples “I’ve got work to do” She said nothing else as she went into the back room grumbling. Oh how wonderful it was to be in charge.

Ash returned with the broom and began cleaning up just in time to hear his little brother's half-hearted attempt at an apology. It was little more than he had come to expect from Lucas but he held his tongue as Charlotte whacked him upside the head. Personally he didn't really care about the skittles or the apology or anything. The bigger issue was Lucas' complete lack of discipline and disregard for those around him. He was still a child and most of it could be attributed to that but he was not so young that he could learn to respect others. Some would say he just expected too much of the boy but Ash was of the opinion that the very reason Lucas was such a terror was that the other campers and councilors expected nothing at all of the boy. The whack on the head was a good start but it wouldn't correct the deeper issue.

As Charlotte left them Ash sighed and walked over. He might as well at least try to salvage something of this interaction and since he needed to be the adult here he supposed it was up to him to do it. Hunkering down in front of the boy Ash fixed Lucas with a look of startling seriousness. "Lucas." He said with that scary intensity he had. "You need to learn that there are consequences for your actions. You cannot simply do whatever you want and expect others to go along with. There are more important things in life than candy and getting your own way."

As soon as his sissy hit him, Lucas screamed as he dropped down onto the floor. He started crying as he laid on his stomach and sprawled out, flailing his limbs in every direction he could. If he could hit one of his siblings, the better. "WHY DID SISSY HIT ME?!?!" he screamed as big tears ran down his cheeks. "I apologized. I did apologize and she hit me. WHY IS SISSY SO MEAN?!?!"

He noticed that scary bubby moved right in front of him and he stopped flailing for a moment. He rolled onto his side and looked up at his brother as he sniffed. Scary bubby was trying to tell him something, but Lucas didn't care. He rolled back onto his stomach. "MY MOMMA LETS ME DO WHATEVER I WANT!!!" he cried out before he screamed, "I WANT MY MOOOOOOOMAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!"

Lucas was having none of it and Ash was getting tired of his brother's nonsense. Perhaps it would do no good but he was about out of patience. "You're mother isn't here and if she were she would have my pity for giving birth to a demigod who is undone by a simple knock on the head that was well deserved. Do you plan to frighten off monsters with tears and wailing? I think not." Standing up Ash turned and walked away from his brother to go back to cleaning. Charlotte wouldn't be pleased if she came back and he had tied Lucas up and put tape over his mouth to stop his crying so barring that he could at least finish cleaning up. He could only help those who were willing to be helped and obviously Lucas was not willing to grow up. If he intent on throwing his tantrum then he could do so without Ash giving him the attention he so obviously wanted.
