New Orleans has seen a lot of changes and upheaval. They still haven't recovered from the attempt on Klaus' baby and the death of all the witches. Most believe the baby perished as well. Meanwhile, Mystic Falls is now supernaturally barring vampires from entering so some old faces are showing up in NOLA. They aren't the only ones, witches from Chance Harbor and beyond are also showing up.
