Where has all the fun gone? | Lucas

Maddie was bored. Her siblings hadn’t enjoyed their voodoo dolls at all, she couldn’t play with the harpies anymore after she plucked one, all the satyrs were scared of her riding them around like goats and Chiron wouldn’t allow her to go into the deep dark woods or whatever the folks at camp called it to find new herbs because apparently it was too dangerous. It was all very rude in Maddie’s opinion and didn’t make for much fun at all. Everything thing she did was apparently breaking the rules somehow and now she had no one to hang out with.

What was a girl to do if she wasn’t allowed to have any fun? Maddie had wandered out to the beach to think about that very thing as it was apparently one of the few places she was still allowed to go. So here she sat in a huff wishing someone would wander by.

If only she could find some friends that wouldn’t tell on her or wouldn’t run screaming after she got done playing with them. That would be ideal, that was what she wanted but with her options limited she was going to have to find some new friends herself. She just didn’t know where to look.

Lucas was going to take the beach hostage, again. His plan worked out the first time around and he got all the skittles he could ever want. But like any seven year old terror, he wanted more. And he was going to get some, but this time he wasn't going as a pirate. Instead, he was going with the military GI Joe route. He dressed up in camouflage and hid in bush beside the beach. His plan was going to work perfectly, besides the fact that the bush kept poking him with the branches.

But he waited for his first victim. Lucas thought it had been hours in the bushes, but it was probably closer to ten minutes when he saw a girl his age walk onto the beach. Now was his chance. He sprung out of the bush as he cried out, "I AM HOLDING THE BEACH HOSTAGE AND YOU CAN ONLY GO ON IT IF YOU GIVE ME CANDY!"

As Maddie stood thinking about possible solutions to her problem things certainly seemed desperate. She needed a distraction, she needed something to do or else the camp really would be in trouble. Fortunately her troubles were short lived as all of a sudden a boy jumped out of the bushes to interrupt her thoughts. She turned and looked him cocking her head to the side slightly in a curious posture as he proceeded to yell at her. Most of it didn’t make sense but that thing about taking hostages that sounded intriguing. Yes, she thought this boy would do nicely.

“Loud shouting boy.” She said to get his attention for a loud shouting boy was precisely what he was. “What is your name?” Her eyes narrowed at him in curiosity. He had said that he wanted candy and Maddie filed that bit of information away for the moment. She would be able to use that later but for now there were more important matters at hand mainly who she was dealing with here. "I haven't seen you before."

Lucas thought he looked pretty intimidating wearing camouflage and screaming and waving around his toy lightsaber. However, this girl didn't even act scared! How rude! Instead, she was asking for his name. What kind of response was that? "I AM G.I. LUCAS!" he cried out as he swung his lightsaber extra wide. "AND I AM HOLDING THIS BEACH HOSTAGE!" He finally lowered his lightsaber as he stuck out his free hand towards the girl. "Now this beach is being held hostage until I get paid in skittles." He moved his hand closer towards the girl. "Now pay up or I will have to destroy you!"

G.I Lucas? This boy had quite the imagination. He also seemed, what was the word…’Dramatic’? Yes that was it. Very dramatic. It was a very interesting combination and tickled Maddie’s morbid sense of curiosity. She watched him for a moment while he shouted at her and while he waved his lightsaber around in the air threateningly and smiled. Maddie definitely had her new playmate and this looked like it was going to be fun.

“I can get you skittles.” She said with a wolfish smile. “But they aren’t here. I would have to go get them and to do that you would have to let me go but I do have a solution.” Maddie watched the boy curiously. He didn’t know it yet but she didn’t have any skittles to give him. What she did have was much better, at least for her, and Lucas was about to find that out. “I will go get them for you, you can even come with me, but you have to agree to one thing. You must agree to play with me. We can play hostage if you like. In fact, that sounds like a very fun game don’t you think?”

I can get you skittles. Lucas stopped flinging around his lightsaber in the air. This was his lucky day! He got to hold the beach hostage again and get some skittles! It was a complete win-win in his book. However, she didn't have the skittles with her. He pouted for a moment before he nodded his head. "Fine. I'll let you go get the skittles. And I'm gonna follow you to make sure you don't run off on me or anything." But she wanted to play with him? That was disgusting. "I don't have to play with you!" he declared as he put his hands on his hips. "I just want your skittles, not your cooties!"

The boy seemed agreeable enough at first until Maddie mentioned playing. That was unfortunate because clearly he didn’t know the answer he was supposed to give to her offer. What Lucas didn’t realize was that he was already her playmate and that when she asked to play the best option was to agree. He would learn but for now Maddie decided to give him a second chance.

“No.” She said simply. “If you don’t play with me you don’t get any skittles. Also, I will have to tell Chiron that you are being mean and not sharing the beach. Then you would be in trouble, Chiron would take away your sword and never let you have skittles again. He would probably still make you play with me too just to teach you a lesson. You know how Chiron likes to teach lessons don’t you? All because you didn’t play with me. Such a shame.”

Lucas didn't like this girl at all. All he wanted was skittles and she wanted to give him cooties. Gross! With both hands on his hips, he scrunched up his face and it got all red before he screamed. "YOU'RE A BIG MEANIE!" He stomped his feet as he started screaming nonsense and making a big commotion with his famous temper tantrums. "I JUST WANT SKITTLES! I DO NOT WANT YOUR COOTIES!" After a couple of minutes, he finally calmed down enough to glare at the girl before screaming. "I'M TELL CHIRON THAT YOU'RE A MEANIE!" And with that, he turned on his heels and stormed off towards the Big House. Chiron would get her in trouble. She'd probably be in time out for being such a big meanie.

Lucas was a tantrum thrower of that there was no doubt. Maddie watched as he scrunched up his face, worked up the fake tears and began to scream. It was an interesting reaction. Normally she had to work much harder to make people scream but all this one needed was to just be told no. Oh she wasn’t that worried about Chiron. The horsey man was used to hearing about her torturing people and she thought that he would be very interested in hearing about how this one was basically taking prisoners on the beach. However if the boy left that meant that she would have to go right back to not having a playmate and that wasn’t acceptable. She had to act fast.

“Oh fine.” She said with a wry smirk. “I have some skittles hidden near here. I won’t make you play with me but you do have to at least come with me to get them otherwise how do you know I'll bring them back.” Hopefully she would get through to the raging boy. She wanted to keep him here but she couldn’t do that unless he was at least willing to go with her to the place of her choosing. “Of course if you want to go tell on yourself then that’s okay too. It would make Chiron’s job easy not having to find the boy who was capturing people on the beach and hurting innocent little girls' feelings.”

Lucas immediately stopped storming away when he heard that the girl had skittles nearby. He turned around and glared at her. After all that trouble he went through and it turned out she did have skittles after all. And that he didn't have to play with her one bit. It was almost too good to be true, but being the naive seven year old he was, he decided to go for it. "Fine," he huffed as he swiped at his eyes before putting his hands on his hips. "I'm going to go with you for the skittles. And I'm not going to play with you at all. Okay?"

"Very well. We will do things your way." Perhaps a change of game was in order. You had to do that sometimes. Different people liked different things after all and Maddie could still see a way for them to have fun together. It just involved stringing Lucas along for a little while and surely she could do that if she kept her offer of Skittles on the table.

"Follow me." Maddie said coolly as she spun and began stalking off the beach. "You have to keep up. You can have all the Skittles you want once we get there but if you get lost..." She paused here before looking back over her shoulder at him. "...well then I may not be able to find you." With that she glanced towards the tree line and continued on her way.

This was going to be great. Lucas was going to get skittles and didn't have to play with that yucky girl. This was a better deal than trying to steal his scary bubby's skittles and getting in trouble with his sissy. But he was content with the deal and didn't notice the slight threat the girl gave him as she made her way towards the forest. He skipped along behind her as he kept up with her. "Are we going to your cabin?" he asked as they made their way. "Or did you hide them? My bubbies and sissies like to hide their skittles from me. I don't know why though. I always find it."

“Not to my cabin.” She said as she led him on towards the woods. “I had to hide them of course. I’m sure you understand why since there are so many people who would take them.” Stopping for a moment as she reached a big mossy weeping willow tree Maddie turned back on Lucas with a sudden spin. “We are close now but you have to close your eyes. I don’t want you to know my hiding place. I will go get some and bring them back to this spot for you but only if you close your eyes and promise not to peek.” The young Eris girl watch Lucas with some interest waiting for his response. If he obeyed like she suspected he would then Maddie thought the boy would be pleasantly surprised with what she brought back but first he had to be patient and follow instructions.

So she did have them hidden like his bubbies and sissies. That meant he could probably find them once she went to get them. Lucas was really good at finding things that were supposed to be hidden, especially if they were Skittles. It looked like it was in the first. How hard would that be to find? He would have to check for himself at a later time, like when the girl was gone. But he had to close his eyes. He pouted a bit as he put his hands on his hips. “Fine,” he said as he closed his eyes. “But you better be quick! I don't like waiting!”

'Excellent…' Maddie thought as she watched the boy close his eyes. She examined him closely to insure he wasn’t cheating and then nodded to herself. “Oh don’t worry. It will be worth it. I’ll bring back a big…bag…of skittles just for you.” Turning away from Lucas the girl dashed behind the tree and out of sight wearing a wickedly gleeful expression on her face. This was going to be so much fun!

The big kids always told her not to go into the forest because it was dangerous but Maddie knew better. When you grew up in the bayous of Louisiana you got used to creepy dark places with lots of critters and sure enough there were a whole lot critters in the forest. In fact, Maddie usually came out to visit them and make friends with them because someone certainly had to. They were lonely and she was sure introducing a few of them to her friend Lucas would help convince the boy to stay and play with her even if she didn't have any skittles. Fortunately she knew just the one to start with.

She was only gone a few minutes but was practically running from excitement as she came back. Lucas was still there thankfully and that was good because the ‘skittles’ she had found for him refused to stay still in her hand and it was kind of hard keeping it from getting away when she had her hands behind her back like she did now. “I’m back! Now keep your eyes closed and hold out your hands. I want you to be surprised at how many skittles I brought you.”
