Make A Scene (Danny)

[Hailey Nichols]

Hailey was only back at camp for a few weeks and it really didn't feel like she left for a year at all. Yes, there was a couple of things that she had to get used to, like going to the Artemis cabin and tables, but everything was almost normal. She didn't have one of those schedules that she had to abide to every day. She got a bit of freedom, but it was mostly keeping an eye on her sister or helping Chiron out with the war.

This was one of the few times she was given a break, so she headed down to the mess hall to grab her lunch. After making an offering to her Lady, she sat down at the Artemis table and started eating her chicken. However, she stopped in mid-bite when she saw someone enter the mess hall. She almost dropped her fork when she saw who it was. Danny was still at camp.

Danny entered the mess hall expecting it to be a normal day; missing Daphne, being confused about what the heck was going on with Jacob, and feeling extremely hungry. He got his food, gave his offering to his father with a little wink for good measure and turned around casually. His eyes fell upon the Artemis table and he dropped his plate when he noticed a girl sitting there. That hair. Those eyes. Those lips... Suddenly Jacob sprung into control and placed a smirk upon his face. He took a few steps forward, Danny violently shook the body they shared and took control. "Back off." HE said to Jacob. Danny hadn't even wanted to date Haiey, it was Jacob who thought he loved her. Danny walked towards the table, "Hi... hi Hailey." He said softly.

Hailey's chest tightened up as all those memories of them together. Countless hours just hanging out and kissing and that night when they... She shut her eyes and quickly shook her head, trying to kick every thought like that out of her head. She was a Hunter now and hunters did not need to be thinking about exboyfriends.

Even if they were approaching them at this moment. She felt her chest tighten up as she forced him a smile, even if it was strained. She wasn't completely over him when she left and she rarely gave herself time to completely get over him. "Hey, Danny," she said as she put her fork down, since she completely lost her appetite. "Funny seeing you here. How are you?"

He stood there for a moment, nodding his head slowly and not even responding until he realized she had spoken to him. He blinked and looked back into her eyes, but only for a moment before turning away quickly. "Yeah... kinda funny, I thought you had gone all hunter now?" Jacob was trying so hard to get out that Danny could barely speak. He noticed what table she was at and took the opportunity to slap himself across the face. "Okay, okay you are a hunter." The slap had temporarily put Jacob at bay. He didn't want him coming out and bothering Hailey, not now. Not after...

For a minute, Hailey forgot how to breathe. Danny was here and all those emotions were just flooding back. She bite her lower lip as she tried to control herself from doing anything rash or stupid. "Yeah," she said as she suddenly felt stupid for explaining to her exboyfriend her new lifestyle. "I'm a Hunter now..." She widened her eyes when he slapped himself. Despite however many so months they were together, Hailey didn't quite understand his quirks. He acted like two different people around her and then did these strange things like this slapping himself. She forced him another smile, showing that his presence didn't bother her... much. "Yeah," she said as she nodded her head. I'm a hunter... and loving it." She added that last part quickly. She pressed her lips together and nodded her head quickly, trying to force herself to believe that statement. "So..." she said as she dragged out the word and looked at him. "How have you been lately?"

Danny swiftly sat down across from her, deciding not to care about the fact that he was sitting at the all girls club table. He leaned across and looked right into her eyes, "So, you really like being a hunter that much, huh?" Before Danny knew it Jacob had slinked his way into control, the eye color didn't even change drastically it just started to fade simply and slowly into the bright blue and the smirk found a place on his lips. Subtly but surely. “I’m doing wonderfully, and you-“ he looked at her shoulders, down to her elbows and followed her wrists to her fingertips. Those hands brought back memories from that night, memories he would rather not think about, “you are obviously doing as well as ever.” He said firmly. Trying not to get angry, at himself. At her. At everything.

Hailey's heart jumped up to her chest when Danny sat at her table. She was perfectly capable handling the situation when he was standing up, but she felt even more vulnerable around him when he was at her level. She gulped, forcing her heart back to its proper place as she nodded her head. "Yeah," she said a lot softer than before. "I am doing well with the Hunters... it's... awesome..." Her eyes wandered a bit and remembered how his body was pressed up against hers during... she quickly shook her head trying to get rid of that memory. She was a hunter now. She couldn't have those kinds of memories running through her head. She smiled softly at Danny as she said, "Um..." She glanced down at her plate, trying to find a suitable conversation topic. "The food hasn't changed." Her face heated up a bit. She felt completely stupid that she managed to make this more awkward than it already was.

Danny nodded and looked over at that pile of food he had dropped on the ground and frowned, "Well, the last time I had the food it was pretty good. I was looking forward to lunch today..." He looked back at her. She did look happy. She looked stronger, and of course, even more beautiful. Because that's how hunters worked. They became even more stunning when they decided to become immortal and leave men behind forever. Danny folded his arms and leaned on the table, "I'm glad you're happy with it." He closed is eyes, then decided that was the worst decision he could have made because an image of Haileys skin managed to force it's way into his view. He opened them again and shook his head, "I should go."

Hailey's breath caught in her chest as Danny leaned forward. Their one and only night together flooded her memory as she tried to fight it back. Why did she have the feeling that she was... still in love with him? That was impossible. She couldn't be in love, since promised to her Lady to turn her back on the company of men. But, she couldn't help but feel a spark of that flame of she felt during their time together.

She nodded her head as she placed both of her hands on the table, hoping that it would disguise the fact she was shaking so badly. She glanced over at the doors, trying to decide if yelling FIRE! and running away would be a chicken move or not. Then he said he should go and Hailey wanted to reach out and tell him to stay. But she also wanted him to leave so she could have some of her sanity back.

"Okay," she said as she smiled at him. Confidently, she hoped, since she didn't want to show him how shaken he had made her. She nodded her head again at him. "It was nice seeing you're still around, Danny."

Jacob finally found Danny's weak spot. Danny didn't want to think about that night, technically he wasn't even there. Jacob used the opportunity of Dannys weakness to take control and his eyes changed to bright blue almost instantly. "It's me Hailey, please don't freak out." He held his hands up in order to block any flying punches that would come his way. "I'm really glad you're here. I really wanted to talk to you." Jacob and Danny hadn't seen Hailey in a long time, and neither of them knew how she'd react to anything they said or did. Jacob stood up and swiftly sat next to her on the other side of the table.
A few other campers glared over at him. Sitting at other tables was already not allowed, sitting with the Hunters was even worst. Jacob took her hand, "My life is falling apart." He said.

Hailey's heart immediately jumped up her throat and then plummeted down to the pit of her stomach as he moved to her side of the table. She felt weak, defenseless without that physical barrier between them. She didn't notice the change of eye color, but she did notice the slight change of behavior. She never really understood Danny like that. Then she felt that spark turn into a flame as he took her hand. "Danny..." she said as she pulled her hand out of his grasp. She didn't need to battle these kind of feelings, especially with him so close. She was going to do something stupid if he didn't get far enough away from her. She quickly looked around the mess hall, noticing the looks they were getting. "What are you doing?" she whispered to him as she turned back to look at him.

Jacob shook his head. He hated being called Danny but he had never told Hailey who he really was. Unlike everyone else who he flaunts his identity to, he just didn't want to scare Hailey back in the day. He folded his arms and leaned back a little, groaning slightly in frustration. "Hailey, i'm sorry." He said, his eyes facing the heavens. He didn't know how worth it it would be to explain he latest experiment with Nick to her. He just wanted someones advice other than Dannys. Daphne was too busy to notice him and there was no way he'd ask Danks or Devin. Hailey had turned up in the nick of time. (HAHA!) "I just... need some advice. I guess." He muttered.

Hailey regarded Danny cautiously. The last thing she needed was her ex-boyfriend to declare his love for her when she was a Hunter. She just couldn't let that happen. Once he crossed his arms and looked up at the ceiling, Hailey took this opportunity to scoot away from her ex a couple of inches. She felt her defenses breaking down when he was this close to her. He always had that effect on her. She raised her eyebrows when he asked for advice. "What kind of advice?" she asked a bit guarded. "And don't do those hypothetical questions that indirectly go back to us. It's over. I'm a Hunter now." She felt her heart break a little bit at her own worlds, but it was the reality of the situation and she had to deal with it.

"You sound like a real hunter now," he said as he looked back at her, keeping his arms folded. "If you must know I had a bit of an interesting experience in my time at camp." He was starting to get angry now. What gave Hailey the right to be a snob to him? Then he remembered, she had the complete right to be that way. He was the one who should be leaving her alone. But Jacob was never a selfless person, quite the opposite to be truthful. "I fell in love you know. With a girl from Zues." The truth was Jacob didnt' like her near as much as Danny did. But Jacob felt like telling the whole story. Plus, maybe he could piss Hailey off along the way and he'd feel better.

Hailey's heart stopped as it sunk into the depths of her stomach. He loved somebody else after her? Someone better? A Zeus. Her still heart started beating rapidly. How dare he? How could she give him everything she had, had him dump her, and then go on to love somebody else.

She grabbed the knife off of the table and gripped it hard, but she didn't do anything else with it. She knew she was turning red, even redder because of her hair. So she did what any rational Hunter would do. She slapped him hard across the face before she stood up. "How dare you," she hissed at him. "How dare you after everything we've been through." She then proceeded to pick her plate up off the table and dumped the contents on him. "I'm not hungry anymore," she spat as she turned around to walk straight out of the mess hall and into the safety of the Artemis cabin.
