Alex hated the war games. He could understand the Legion’s need for training. He could understand why they needed to practice real to life scenarios of sieges and battles. What he couldn’t understand is why the cohorts insisted on going head to head with each other in some kind of full force death match. Why couldn’t they use practice weapons or, Mars be damned, at least try not to purposefully kill each and fill up his infirmary with all manner of wounded and people in need of urgent care? He supposed he should be used to it by now as many times as he had dealt with the aftermath but there had to be a better way than this.
Fortunately the games were almost over. The wounded were still trickling in but for the most part the worst of the injuries had already been dealt with or at least they had been until some 5th cohort members rushed up to him exclaiming about some hysterical girl who nearly got cut in half. He wasn’t sure he caught all of the details but the legionnaires proceeded to drag him away and before he knew it he was led to a stretcher with a hyperventilating blonde girl who looked like she was having a panic attack right before his eyes.
Alex gave a silent nod sending the legionnaires back to their duties and stepped closer to the stretcher giving the girl’s injury a once over. The cut over her shoulder was bad but hardly as life threatening as the legionnaires had lead him to believe. There was a lot of blood but nothing that he couldn’t handle. His immediate concern however was the girl’s mental state. She didn’t look good at all and he didn’t need a panicky patient while he was trying to work. Fortunately as he stepped closer he realized that he recognized the girl as well and that was something that he hoped to use to his advantage.
“You’re Anya right?” He said as he moved over beside her. He sounded calm, cordial even, not wanting to work the girl up any more than she already was. “Do you remember me from the party the other night?” He didn’t need to use his father’s powers to see the problem. She was in shock and probably in a lot of pain but he needed to make sure that she wasn’t going to hurt herself before he started working. “I’m Alex remember? We spent some time talking while you waited for your friend.”

Alex sighed. Well if you ever needed to catch up on the local gossip or on a certain legionnaire’s ‘riding’ abilities this was the place to do it. At least the beer was free although he had his doubts as to how long it would last with the present company. There was one girl who seemed to not be like the other however and by the deer in head lights look she was giving it seemed as if she could use some rescuing even if that meant directing her back to her own, much safer, barracks. She certainly didn’t look like the partying type.
“Not your usual crowd I take it?” He said nodding to Anya who was still standing by the door. “Or at least it wasn’t what you were expecting.” He gave a wry chuckle unsure how she would take someone she didn’t know talking to her. He didn’t think he was a scary guy but you never could tell with some people. “I’m Alex by the way.”

‘Well this was certainly exciting.’ Alex thought as he sipped his drink. He hadn’t even been here five minutes and the party had already descended into pot and loud music. He supposed as one of the legion’s primary medics he should be more concerned about what were his potential patients but he also knew that he couldn’t really stop them either. Oh sure he could get the party shut down if he wanted to but the only thing that would accomplish would be to make him look like the camps biggest buzzkill which wasn’t really fair to those who were legitimately trying to have fun. In other words people like him.
Alex wasn’t really sure how much fun he was going to have tonight but a little alcohol could go a long way to help with that. He just was not looking forward to the cleanup for the few that got a little too crazy. He would probably head out before it got that far but for now he was content on enjoying a few drinks and unwinding for a bit. He could use a chance to get out of his head for a while after another crazy day in the infirmary.

His Swami apparently did a pretty good Yoda impression when she started reversing words around on him. However, he may have pushed his funniness quota to the max today as it took a while for her to recover from a fit of the giggles. He didn’t want to mess up her meditation when they were supposed to be serious so he decided to cut out the jokes for the moment. Still, he had to admit that she had a pretty infectious smile and that was good because she looked like she could use a few smiles and laughs. He didn’t know how he knew that but they did say laughter was the best medicine. Even a son of Aesculapius could appreciate that.
As she got settled down Alex turned his attention to the task at hand. There were times when one needed to be serious and right now he focused in on the moment and on Addison’s instructions. He watched as she closed her eyes and followed suit when she asked him. He focused, steadied his breathing and tried to find his center like he would imagine some Buddhist monk doing. The only problem was that he wasn’t a Buddhist monk and for a guy so skilled at medicine he couldn’t seem to slow his mind down.
“What happens if you let everything out all at once?” He asked clearly having trouble with the idea of eliminating distractions. “Seems like that would be the easiest way of getting rid of your problems.” For the son of Aesculapius the quickest solution to your problems was usually the best. When you were thrown into a trauma situation and had injured people in need of help you didn’t have time to take things one step at a time. Maybe that’s why he was having so much trouble with this now.

Alex didn’t know what to make of her statement about having people to blame even if he didn’t want to but he decided to shrug it off as she seemed to be joking with him. He was finding that she had a good sense of humor and they had been joking around with each other anyways so it wasn’t like he had any reason to be suspicious of her. Instead he walked over beside her and sat down in the spot that she had indicated even mimicking her crisscross sitting style.
He wasn’t so sure about this meditation thing but he was willing to give it a shot. The girl seemed nice enough and besides it was an easy distraction from his problems. If it went well who knew, he might even start trying it at home as a way to deal with stressful conversations with his mother.
“Oh wise Swami Addison.” He said as he got himself situated. “I have come to you seeking the secret of life.” Smiling as he got comfortable he looked back to the girl to get his next instructions. He promised himself he would take this seriously for the girl's sake once they got started but for now he couldn’t resist. “So what’s the next step oh meditation master?”

Why did he get the feeling he was going to regret healing this girl? He had known lots of bad patients over the years, meeting people when they are hurt and needed help didn't exactly lend itself to the most pleasant of meetings but this girl seemed exceptionally vicious to start throwing around accusations when he was trying to help her. Hopefully the healing would get her on her way and out of Alex's hair because he had too much to do to worry about this girl's special brand of crazy.
The healing was over in a minute and before she had even spoke Alex was already mentally moving on to the next crisis. When she did speak he returned her smile with a small one of his own that didn't come with teeth. "I'm glad to hear you're feeling better now I suggest you go to the barracks, get some rest and..." He stopped short as she spoke again this time telling him the strangest thing. Something was different about her voice, something compelling and what she was saying? Well that was no problem. It wasn't like every patient had injuries like hers that he would have to examine them. Still...
Something clicked in Alex's mind and he turned to leave without a word. Leaving was suddenly the one thing on his mind and that's exactly what he did stepping out into the trauma room like a man in a daze. What was he doing again? He couldn't remember but he knew he needed to get out of here for a while, maybe take the rest of the day off. He did need to run along after all and it would certainly be nice not to have to look at any more injuries for a while.

Alex waved his hand in the air as she mentioned him being noble. He didn't see it like that. It wasn't something he did to seem noble it was just who he was. There was no need to attach any more adjectives to it than that. "I work in the infirmary." He said by way of explanation. He hooped that would clear up a little of the confusion but just to be sure he added "I see a lot of people on their worst days so I can't really blame them...well, most of them anyways."
He watched the girl for a moment as he considered what she was saying. She seemed amused and a little curious about him which was different. Not that he minded but he was so used to speeding around from emergency to emergency that he rarely took the time to just slow down and really talk with someone for a while. It was nice. "Are you sure the bear should be doing the teaching?" He said in a teasing manner as he gave the bear joke one more go. "Maybe you're just luring me in to try and eat me." He smiled at her to show he wasn't being serious and then gave her a nod as he took a few short steps closer. "Alright, you have me curious. Addison, you have your first student. I’ll try not to be too disruptive."

The damage wasn't so extensive that he would be unable to provide the girl with a little relief but he did want to make sure the healing was thorough. Fixing a few broken ribs was all fine and dandy but he didn't want to release this girl out of his care if she was dealing with something more serious. That said it was usually much easier to help someone if they were willing to work with him which this patient didn't seem to be.
When she made her comment about him having his hand up her shirt Alex frowned. He met her glare with an cold stare of his own. He didn't lack sympathy for the girl's situation but he had no time to deal with childish antics like this just because Ryan was impatient. "Well then Ryan you may be waiting while I find another medic, one with xray vision as most doctors I know have to see the problem to fix it." He said coolly as he turned his attention to getting this girl out of his hair as quickly as possible. "But since neither you or I have that luxury I suggest you let me do my job."
With that he began calling on his father's powers to speed up her healing process. It wouldn't take long which was good. Alex didn't have time for these petty games when there were others to help. Maybe a little healing would improve Ryan's attitude somewhat. At the very least it would allow him to move on yup more seriously injured patients.

“Heh. I guess you’re right.” He said with a chuckle but he still couldn’t see why the meditation was so necessary to her. That said he had never been one to second guess someone else’s diagnosis until he knew more about the situation. She probably had her reasons and it wasn’t really his place to pry. Instead he decided to take a step back before he put his foot in his mouth by saying something he shouldn't. “You’ll have to tell me if it works or not. I could use a way to get rid of the things I don’t need.”
Alex ran a hand through his hair as his thoughts turned back to the family dinner. That was something he would have cut out for sure. He had more important things to worry about than what his mother thought of his accomplishments. Still, it was nice to realize that he hadn’t been thinking about it as much since he had started talking to the girl. “It’s nice to meet you Addison and I wouldn’t be too worried about me. Sneaking up on girls is pretty low on my list of ways to have a good time. I just try to look out for people when I can. I’ve found it saves me more trouble in the long run even for the ones who have a tendency to bite.”

A child of Discordia huh. Well Alex guessed he could see how that could add to the problem. Still, he wondered if he was getting the full story here. Child of Discordia or not something had to happen to make the person lose control of their powers. That said though it wasn’t his job to figure that out. Instead he nodded along at her comments as he examined her and considered how best to handle her injuries.
“Don’t worry.” He said as he set her hand back down beside her. “We’ll take care of that soon and you look tough enough to hang in there a little longer.” Alex glanced up giving her a reassuring smile before turning his attention back to her other injuries which looked to be the bigger cause of trouble. “Try and stay still I’m just going to roll up your shirt a little to get a look at your ribs.” Slowly Alex pushed Ryan’s shirt up and ran his fingers lightly over the tender spots he was seeing. “Looks like you took a pretty good hit or two right along here. That must have been some fight. Are you sure you weren’t hurt anywhere else?" Alex gave her one more look over just to be sure he wasn't missing anything but it wouldn't do to send her away without making sure she was fully on the way back to recovery. "I’m not seeing any other serious injuries but if you feel like anything else is wrong you should go ahead and tell me. If not I'm guessing you're probably anxious to be done with the talking hmm?"

“Touché.” He said with a smirk. “But sleeping bear or not I just wanted to make sure you were alright. It’s not every day I see someone out here alone, meditating.” Alex gave the girl a curious look. Meditation wasn’t something he usually associated with people their age. From a medical standpoint he could appreciate it for the psychological benefits it provided but he couldn’t see what the girl would need to be meditating about. He supposed she probably had her reasons but still, it was definitely an interesting sight.
“Meditation huh? I’ve never been able to get into it myself. Too much going on in my head I suppose.” He chuckled realizing he didn’t even know the girl’s name yet and here he was talking to her about meditation habits. “Guess I should introduce myself. I’m Alex and for what it’s worth I’m glad you weren’t hurt and that you didn’t turn out to be a sleeping bear.”

Alex watched as the girl jumped and pitched sideways out of her seat to land on her shoulder. He winced a little for her as he saw the impact and hoped she was alright. He hadn't meant to scare her into hurting herself after all he had just been curious. In hindsight perhaps it would have been better to announce himself. Unfortunately there was no going back now.
"I've heard it." He said in response to her question. "But you didn't look like a sleeping bear to me." Granted appearances could be deceiving with demigods and in his experience the more innocent something looked then the more dangerous it actually turned out to be but he couldn't just leave her out here even if she wasn’t sleeping. "And I don't suppose anything is wrong with sleeping outside just that it's a good idea to be aware of your surroundings." He shook his head a little and focused his attention back on the situation at hand. "Look, I didn't mean to startle you. Are you okay? It looked like you took a pretty good fall there."

“Ryan hmm?” He said as he moved over to take a seat beside her bed. He hardly even took notice of her smile as he sat down his mind and eyes already focusing on her injuries whether than her words or her face. Instead he began to check her over almost immediately nodding and giving little sounds of agreement as he did so.
To be honest he didn't really need her to tell him the issue. As a child of Aesculapius he could see the injuries but he found having patients talk to him helped put their minds at ease even if he was barely listening. "Umhmm and how did that happen?" He asked as he lifted her arm and began turning her wrist gently to test the range of motion. She would probably feel a few twinges of pain but nothing too serious. "Your whole cohort messing you up? Not usually common for a Roman cohort to act out against its own. Tell me when you begin to feel pain."

Alex walked along the streets of New Rome rubbing his temples and trying to erase the memories of the last hour from his aching head. It wasn't an easy task. He had just finished up another family dinner and it had gone about how he had expected it to. When you got a bunch of old famous Roman demigods together all of whom were trying to one up each other it was only natural to come away feeling a little put out when they all started questioning your own accomplishments. The worst of it was that his mom had come to visit and as usual he found out that he wasn't quite living up to the standards she had come to expect of him. That had led to another fight and thus here he was walking the streets with a pounding head.
He didn't know why he should expect any different. To hear his mom tell it he had never been able to live up to the family's standards so why should he change that now? He didn't know but this time she had really gotten under his skin and that had been bad. He had lost his cool with all his family around and now he really needed some time to cool off. A little walk would do him some good so that's what he was doing at least until his distracted wanderings brought him to the middle of the gardens.
He didn't know why he had come to this place. It wasn't particularly special to him and he wasn't known for his late night wanderings. Still, whatever had brought him hear caused him to stop and when he did he glanced around and spotted a girl. Was she sleeping? He didn't know but the sight did cause a twinge of concern in that deeply doctor part of him that he couldn't quite ignore so he spoke up. "You know, even here in New Rome it's not exactly the best idea to sleep outside."

I wasn’t every day that Alex got to actually relax and take a lunch break during the day. Legionnaires had a habit of getting themselves hurt and usually when he was on call at the sick bay he rarely had a chance to sit down at all. Today it looked like things were going to be different however. No war games were scheduled, training had apparently gone over without a hitch and so far it had been a little slow today. That was fine with Alex. He was going to enjoy having a few minutes to himself before getting back to work.
“Alex we have a problem.” Came the familiar voice of one of the nurses behind him. Alex halted mid bite of his sandwich to glance in the direction of the nurse. The nurse was standing there looking panicked which wasn’t really anything new. Still, he wished that sometimes the camp could hold itself together for just one day without him patching them back up. So much for that slow day he guessed.
“Alright, let’s see what the damage is.” He said as he swallowed and sat his unfinished sandwich back on the table. “Explain while we walk.” With that he was up and heading towards the trauma room listening to the nurse as he went. The situation was a common one. Some kind of big training injury, a lot of people were banged up, with some worse than others. Should be just another day in the sick bay but as they arrived what Alex found was anything but. Less experienced medics were running around in a panic, patients were being left without attention and everything seemed to be in a state of chaos. This sick bay needed some order and it needed it now. Fortunately Alex was just the person to give it.
Grabbing nurses and medics as they passed Alex went into action giving orders and managing assignments. This was what he was good at, this was where he was at his best and it showed because in a few minutes he had already calmed the situation greatly. Patients were being assigned beds and taken care of, people were working as a team and that left Alex to help out. Stopping by at the bed of an injured legionnaire he pulled a curtain for a little privacy and glanced down at his patient. “Sorry about your wait. Why don’t you start by telling me your name and what happened and we’ll see about getting you back up on your feet hmm?”
