For a moment Celeste wondered if she had stumped the girl. She seemed to think for a moment but then finally picked up on something and began to play a song that the purple haired girl instantly recognized. Celeste leaned back to look at the sky while she listened and softly hummed the chorus along with Nikka’s singing while taking little sips of her adult beverage. Not many would have known that it was Dylan who had originally wrote and performed that piece especially when it had been made most popular by Guns N’ Roses. Nikka had known though and that won her a few brownie points in Celeste’s book because she definitely preferred the original.
As the song ended Celeste glanced over at Nikka as the girl began talking about the stars again. “That's a pretty good talent to have.” She replied wistfully as Nikka mentioned being able to find her way by the stars. “I can do that with plants sometimes and help them grow. Not very useful in camp but I like it and it makes me feel close to my mom you know?” Celeste figured that Nikka might just know what she meant. It wasn’t easy being the flower child of the first cohort and even though she had gotten used to how things worked in the Legion it never really felt like she fit in. Maybe it wasn’t so easy being a daughter of Urania either.
“I think it’s perfectly natural to want a break every now and then.” Celeste paused for a second thinking that statement over. She didn’t normally talk so freely with people she didn’t know but it kind of felt right at the moment. She probably shouldn’t say such things to a fellow legionnaire but Nikka was nice and Celeste didn’t think the girl was the type that was likely to betray her. “Just don’t tell my centurions I said that.” She added with a giggle.

“No, no. It’s not that bad.” Celeste lied with a smile. The taste was what she couldn’t get around but in all honesty the second sip she had taken really hadn’t been completely awful. Besides, Ceres made the ingredients that were in the beer grow and her mom wouldn’t make bad things would she? So Celeste kept taking a sip occasionally and by following Nikka’s advice she seemed to manage much better than that first surprise swallow.
“umm…Do you know anything by Bob Dylan?” The purple haired girl said after a moment of thought. Dylan was an older artist but if Nikka knew the Eagles there was a chance she might know someone who had been so influential in American music. Really though with the mood she was in right now she would have probably been interested in listening to just about anything so long as it didn’t mess with the feeling of being out here on a night like tonight.
“Wow Urania? It must be nice to look up at the beautiful starry sky and see all kinds of cool things.” Celeste turned her attention back to the sky while she listened to Nikka play. It really was a pretty night to be out and not only because spring was just around the corner. “Me? I was just enjoying the growing plants and the cool air.” She wiggled her toes into the grass enjoying the feel of it under her feet and let out a little sigh. “I’m Celeste, a daughter of Ceres.” She figured that would probably explain enough. It did for most people anyways. Just to make sure though she added “I just can’t help myself when it gets like this. I have to come out and enjoy nature.”

The girl seemed nice and that made Celeste smile. She was also very talented and when she started in on the next tune the flower child gasped in surprise. “Oh I know this one. I really like it too.” Celeste didn’t normally get excited about much of anything but she did like old music especially when that music was coming from an acoustic guitar. So when the girl kept playing and invited her to sit Celeste didn’t hesitate to join her by sitting down cross-legged beside the girl where she had indicated.
“Really? You would play something I suggested?” Celeste said as she took the beer can without really looking at it. The daughter of Ceres was not much of a drinker but she didn’t really think anything about it as she popped the tab and leaned back to take a swallow of what she suspected might be soda. It was not soda. In fact, the beer was not much like soda at all and the big swallow she took nearly made her gag at the taste. She sputtered a bit as she finished clearly showing her inexperience but somehow managed to keep it down perhaps because she didn’t want to end up tossing her dinner all over the poor redhead.
Celeste was left with a bit of a quandary. She knew that she didn’t particularly like the beer but she also knew that it would be kind of rude to refuse the redhead's hospitality especially after being so nice in offering to sing her a song. Ultimately though it was her desire to please that won over her more rational side. As the girl mentioned something about the sky Celeste nodded and very cautiously took another sip of her drink. Hopefully she would be okay if she just took things slow. “Yeah it really is.” She said trying to make up for her newbie mistake earlier. “Do you come out here often?”

Celeste walked barefoot under the stars through the field of Mars letting the fresh carpet of growing grass tickle her toes. It was starting to get warmer. Spring was almost here. That meant pretty soon the flowers and the grass and the trees would all be coming to life and that made the daughter of Ceres very happy indeed. There was still a little bit of winter left of course but the pleasant bay area weather had Celeste already feeling it and she just couldn’t resist coming out for an evening stroll after she had seen the tall grass growing this morning in practice.
The girl walked among the high grass breathing in the fresh air and letting the evening breeze take her long purple hair out behind her. She figured she was the only one out of the barracks this late and that she might just get to spend some time gazing up at the stars but then she began to hear music coming from somewhere nearby. The song was familiar and it sounded like an acoustic guitar so Celeste let her curiosity get the best with her and began to drift slowly towards the sound.
The music was coming from a red haired girl who appeared to be pretty spaced out as she was smiling and staring up at the sky. The music was nice though and Celeste had always liked the sound of acoustic guitar so she stood aside and listened while she waited for the girl to finish. Once she did Celeste decided to make herself known by stepping out slowly into the girl’s line of sight and speaking. “Wow you’re really good...” She said in an airy, wonder-filled, tone of voice that sounded like she was impressed. “umm...I hope you don’t mind but I heard you playing and couldn’t help but follow the sound. I’m glad I did.”

Isla seemed really adamant that Celeste wasn’t to blame. The purple haired girl didn’t know if she could believe that or not but she had many years of experience in pleasing others and knew that when someone was that adamant it was best not to argue with them. Besides, Celeste would probably keep on thinking it no matter what the girl said anyways so it was better to just drop it for now. What Isla didn’t know wouldn’t hurt her after all.
What Celeste was really concerned about though was the poor girl’s hands. Even though Isla kept telling her that she was alright here was a small way that Celeste could help, at least she thought she could anyways. Sure the girl wasn’t in any real danger but jumping in to action gave Celeste something to do and that meant she could stop thinking about her own inadequacies for a second which would go a long way to calming her down.
“It’s okay I know something that will help. Just wait here okay?” She said with a confident nod and hopped up with a sudden purpose. Like Isla suggested neosporin would have been fine but since they didn’t have any here and they were away from camp they needed an alternative. Fortunately Celeste’s abilities told her that there was some Roman Chamomile near her mother’s shrine that would work just fine for this situation. Ducking off behind the shrine Celeste was gone just moments before returning with a handful of white and yellow flowers.
“Here.” She said as she came back over to Isla gently taking the girl’s injured hands and pressing the flowers into them. “Squeeze these into your palm. They have an oil that will clean the scraps and soothe the pain.” Celeste gave her a flash of a warm smile and closed the girl’s fingers in over the flowers. “It’s not much but it is just as good as Neosporin. Plus you won’t need to go to the infirmary later except maybe to get a Band-Aid or something.”
That task completed Celeste seemed a little more at ease. The nervousness was still there but it seemed as if providing this small service did genuinely do something for her. “Sorry, I hope you don’t mind. I just knew that might help and wanted to try.” Celeste smiled again hoping that her homemade remedy was having an effect and then remember she hadn’t even answered the girl’s question from before. “So you’re from the fourth right? I’m from the first...I guess I should have told you that when I introduced myself huh? I just forgot about it in the rush and everything. Umm...How are your hands feeling?”

Celeste joined Danielle as she began walking towards the door. The blonde girl really did seem to have put the incident earlier behind them which was good. She really shouldn’t have left her armor out in everyone’s way especially at a time when everybody would be walking past exhausted from training. She shouldn’t have been so inconsiderate but at least things seemed to be working out for the best since Danielle actually seemed kind of nice.
“I know.” She said simply as the girl mentioned her name. “I try to pay attention during role call every day...you never know when you might need to call out to someone on the battlefield so it’s good to keep up with names.” Celeste didn’t talk much but she did try and pay attention. Even if she didn’t actually fit in with a lot of the 1st cohort crowd she hoped it would at least make her family happy somehow. “umm...Why are you always down by the ice rink? Do you work there or something?

Celeste relaxed visibly as Danielle seemed to drop the issue. She also was happy that the girl had agreed to her suggestion and was letting her do something to rectify the situation. It wasn’t much, just a cup of hot chocolate, but Celeste liked to be liked and if it took a little coca to win over one of her cohort mates then she didn’t mind.
“I could go for hot chocolate.” She said as her face lit in a slow smile. Celeste didn’t really make it over to that side of New Rome much but who could say no to hot chocolate? Even though she was still a little tired the thought of doing something kind of relaxing with someone else for a change seemed like a fun idea and served to give her enough energy to slip off the bed on to her feet. “I don’t think I’ve ever been over around the ice rink before so this will be new. Oh and I’m Celeste by the way. I wasn’t sure if you knew that or not…”

Celeste only just kept herself from breathing an audible sigh of relief when Danielle told her that she wasn't going to involve the centurions. That was good. That was real good but it didn't really make the purple haired girl feel much better. Celeste's need to please was already kicking into full gear and if she didn't find some way to make it up to Danielle then she might end up telling on herself. Which would probably end worse for her.
"I promise..." She said with her head lowered in defeat. Celeste still felt pretty crummy but there was hope. She had an idea. "But you really should let me make it up to you. I could carry your things for you or...oh I could grab you a coffee. Do you like coffee?" Perhaps she was coming off as too eager but she really did feel like she should do something, anything, to make it better. If not for Danielle then to at least put her own mind at ease.

Celeste wasn’t really sure what it would feel like to have an elephant sitting on your chest but as the air rushed out of her that’s what she thought. It was a crazy heart stopping moment to feel like you couldn’t breathe and as Celeste gasped for air she had the thought that this might really be how it ended for her. Not out on the battlefield where her relatives would remember her name but here in the dirt in front of her mother’s temple mouthing like a fish out of water. Fortunately she calmed down and as she did her breath began to come back but it was a scary moment nonetheless.
As she started to regain control of herself Celeste glanced up to see the person that she had run into, a girl about her own age, was already up and offering her a hand. Celeste bit the corner of her lip nervously but took the offered hand even as the other girl began apologizing. “No, it wasn’t you’re fault.” The purple haired girl replied anxiously as she got to her feet. “I should be apologizing to you…I wasn’t watching where I was going.” She mentally kicked herself for letting this happen. Why was she always being such a klutz? If she would just slow down and watch where she was going then this wouldn’t happen.
“I think I’m okay now. I just couldn’t breathe for a second. I think I was just going too fast.” It wasn’t a good excuse. Stuff like this always seemed to happen to Celeste. She was always messing things up somehow but it was worse when she got other involved. “I really am sorry…” She said as she looked up at the other girl after examining herself for injuries. It had been a hard fall but the only thing that would take lasting damage was her pride and she was pretty used to that by now.
“I’m Celeste.” She said and smiled a little as Isla introduced herself with a little pun. She didn’t seem mad and that was good. If Celeste was going to run into another legionnaire up here at least it was someone who seemed nice. “I don’t usually run into many people up here either this early in the morning. It’s pretty quiet most of the time.” Celeste was still a little wary of the other girl, she didn’t like causing trouble but despite that reservation she was always stepping in it. Granted Isla wasn’t yelling at her so that was good but Celeste felt like she needed to do something besides just apologize. That was when she noticed the girl’s hands.
“Oh your hands…” Celeste went back to biting her upper lip. The injuries didn’t look serious but she could bet they hurt and here Isla was talking to her like it was nothing. That made Celeste feel pretty bad. She should have been more concern about Isla and noticed her injuries but as usual she was spending too much time thinking about herself. “Are they okay? You aren’t hurt anywhere else are you?”

It was morning at Camp Jupiter and Celeste was where she usually was, kneeling before the altar of her mother in quiet meditation and prayer. It had been a long standing tradition for the girl to start her day out like this. She liked the sunrise, she liked seeing the world waking up around her and the way the flowers and plants opened up to accept the morning rays. More than that it was quiet on Temple Hill this early and since she didn’t think her mom got much love otherwise it was a nice chance for Celeste to try and communicate with her even if it sometimes felt a little one sided.
So the daughter of Ceres woke up early, snuck out of the barracks and made her way up to her mother’s shrine to give her little offerings. It wasn’t much. Just some fruit and vegetables that she grew in a personal garden. Celeste had learned long ago that she could do this, watch the sun rise and sneak back to the barracks while everyone was getting up for the day and so far it had worked for her. No one was ever out here so she didn’t bump into anyone and while it might be a little scandalous for a member of the 1st to be breaking the rules like this so far this little rebellion hadn’t cost her anything…yet.
If she wanted to keep it that way though she was going to have to leave soon. Celeste smiled as she saw the first rays of sun crest the hill and with that she knew it was time to go. Experience had taught her it was easiest to sneak back in while everyone was getting ready and after saying one last quick prayer she was ready. It was all in the timing and as stepped out from her mother’s shrine she fully expected to make a quick pace back to her bunk to gather her things. Life had a way of surprising you though and that’s exactly what happened when instead of turning back towards camp she ran straight into someone coming from the opposite direction. Being a featherweight it didn’t take much to push her off her feet and before she knew it Celeste went down in a tangle of limbs and purple hair with a loud “oof” as the air rushed out of her. So much for her fast pace.

Celeste wasn’t good at this standing up for herself thing. She knew that she was going to pick up her gear eventually but now with Danielle standing over her and looking like a terror her desire to please others and not disappoint them was kicking in big time. The blonde girl wasn’t hurt at least but simply picking up after herself wasn’t good enough. Danielle had a lecture for her and Celeste took it like a shamed puppy that had peed in the wrong corner.
“I am really sorry. I didn’t mean to leave it in anyone’s way. You uh aren’t going to tell the centurions are you? I really don’t want to get in trouble…” Getting in trouble was so embarrassing. There were usually some menial tasks to perform but that really was second to the fact that everyone would know what you had done and look down on you. Celeste didn’t want that and in fact, she was looking to avoid it at all cost. “Please don’t tell. I can do something to make it up to you. I promise.”

Celeste practically squeaked in shock when she heard the sharp voice come to her from nearby. She didn’t have to guess who it was directed at. It was her, always her and pretending like she hadn’t heard it simply wasn’t an option. Immediately the Ceres girl’s eyes flew open and gave the blond girl standing there glaring at her an apologetic look. It probably wouldn’t help but Celeste didn’t want any trouble. Not today. Not now.
“I’m sorry.” She said letting the fear of disapproval creep into her voice ever so slightly. “I didn’t mean to be in the way I just…well it was only just a minute. I was going to move it.” Hurriedly the purple haired girl hoped off the bed and made a show about cleaning up her area. Maybe if she did the other girl, Danielle was her name, wouldn’t tell the centurions that she was slacking. She piled the heavy armor on her bed fully intending to complete the work before relaxing again but Danielle was still there and trying to make things right one more time before the girl left probably wouldn’t hurt. “I am sorry. I will put it away like we’re supposed to I was just tired. You uh…you didn’t hurt yourself did you?”

Celeste watched as the Catherine set down at the table and began to situate herself. She tried to be polite and ignore the girl’s efforts so as not to make things more awkward but she recognized it for what it was immediately. It was hard to get away from the Roman social etiquette that was drilled into the upper crust of society and no one knew that better than the constant embarrassment to her aunt and uncle, Celeste.
The problem was that her father had never put much emphasis on forcing her into the Roman box. When he died and she went to live with her aunt all of a sudden she had to eat right, talk right, even breathe right, and for Celeste with her wildly colored hair and her reserved nature she quickly became a black sheep of her family. Celeste hoped that Catherine was one of those that could juggle the responsibility better than herself but she did know that it wouldn’t be polite to talk about here so the daughter of Ceres wisely kept her mouth shut and attention averted.
When Catherine spoke up again that was Celeste’s que that it was okay to continue. She glanced back at the other girl as her small smile returned and gave her a little embarrassed nod. “Yeah…Sorry about that. I guess it’s just kind of hard to talk in the barracks sometimes.” Now that it was out in the open Celeste felt a little bad about not making more of an effort to talk to her fellow cohort members. She tried to be a useful team member, tried to make her presence known but so often she fell short. There was nothing she could do about it now of course but she just hoped Catherine wouldn’t hold it against her. Fortunately as the girl continued that didn’t seem to be the case.
“Yeah I guess you’re right.” She said with a giggle at the thought of children of Neptune suddenly deciding to give them all a dunk. “The centurion wouldn’t be able to boss us around even if he was here. At least I don’t think…” Celeste really didn’t want to test that theory. In all likelihood she would probably jump if someone shouted an order right now even if it came while she was having her coffee. “But it doesn’t look like we’ll have to find out.” Casting a glance around just to be sure she relaxed a little. “So uh what brings you to New Rome today?”

As if on cue a voice spoke up behind her causing Celeste to stop what she was doing. That was a bummer but at least she had been expecting it. She hated when people snuck up on her but sneaking was kind of hard in a room full of disgruntled Romans. Slowly Celeste turned to see who had addressed her only to find a somewhat familiar face standing there at her table and looking like she didn’t really know what to say. The girl was drenched from head to toe like most of the other Romans but Celeste could remember her from her cohort and that was comforting. If she was going to have to sit with someone it might as well be someone that she kind of knew even if the situation wasn’t the best.
“Sure, you can have a seat.” Celeste said as she gave the girl a smile that she hoped came across as welcoming friendly. Knowing that the situation was already kind of awkward the least she could do was try and make it less so even if she wasn’t the most social person herself. “umm…Catherine right? Guess you got caught out in the storm too huh?” Granted it wasn’t the best conversation starter, of course she had gotten caught out in the storm why else would she be so wet, but what else was there to talk about besides the weather? At least she hadn’t embarrassed herself. Gods she always worried about that and it wasn’t like it was made any easier by the fact that she knew the girl. If she messed up now Catherine would probably go back and tell all their fellow legionnaires about how weird the Ceres girl was and Celeste didn’t need any more rumors flying around about her.

Celeste let out a sigh as she slumped down on her bunk and began stripping off her armor. I had been quite the day of training and the daughter of Ceres was exhausted. Fortunately now that drill was over that meant her weekend could finally begin and she was already looking forward to getting into some comfortable clothes and getting away from the barracks for a while. Granted she didn't have any big plans but she wasn't really a big plans type of girl. Besides, right now anything was better than spending another minute in heavy metal armor out in the hot sun.
Slipping out of her greaves felt amazing and when she finally pulled the coast of scale mail over her head it was like a little bit of heaven. She would probably get yelled at later for not putting her armor up immediately like she was supposed to but in her tank top and shorts she actually felt a little bit like she was a human being again. It was all she could do to just fall back into her bunk and enjoy the sensation of being free for the day. She didn't care which of her fellow legionnaires saw her. Celeste was done.
Her fellow cohort members milled about her doing there own post training rituals but Celeste ignored them all for the moment. She was sure they probably all had their weekend plans laid out and that was fine. Celeste didn't usually get involved in the parties around the barracks and would probably get a bite to eat before going for a walk, whatever she could do to get her mind off work and for her that would be enough. She was just ready to take it easy for a while and hoped her plans wouldn't be interrupted.
